Servers - What do you need to get going

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Servers - What do you need to get going

Hi, could someone tell me what you need to start your own server. Like hardware and approx costs and software, then what sort of internet connection etc.

Thanks

You must have a Broadband connection...period. Dialup just doesn't offer the pipe need to run a server.

Your biggest concern is going to be the CPU. You're going to need the power in that spot since FL server is a major processor hog. The RAM, minimum to run a decent server I'd say is 512.

It all depends on the total numbers of people you want to host. The biggest the numbers, the more emphasis on parts. I run a server on a AMD 1.05 CPU with 512 RAM and DSL (non-commercial). I max out as around 10-12 peeps. Again, it's the CPU that is the bottleneck.

SOFTWARE
The basic software required to get a server up and running is on the Freelancer CD - just run FLSERVER.EXE, fill in the blanks and you're off.

Running a stable cheat/mod-free server is a different matter! You should run the Microsoft 1.1 patch which fixes a few bugs and cheats. I'd also recommend installing FLAdmin to monitor and administer the server. You might also want to try LancerGuard, which is a server-side mod which shuts down most of the remaining annoying cheats but some admins have reported issues with it.

HARDWARE
Freelancer is processor-intensive and this is predominantly the limiting factor in how many players a server can support. An Intel P3 1.0GHz maxes out at just shy of 10 users, a P4 2.0Ghz at around twice that many. Even the fastest CPUs currently available won't support many over 30 users without the server becoming unstable. 512MB or RAM is probably about right, depending on which OS you're running under.

NETWORK
You'll need a broadband connection but the game isn't as demanding of bandwidth as might be imagined. On a 512kb DSL connection the bottleneck will almost certainly be CPU.
