Quick question for server admins out there

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Quick question for server admins out there

Browclops, Calgary, Argonus, Alpha Centari, Raptors, don't panic et. all....

Any of you guys seeing an "anonmaly" withany of your servers? Let me explain what we're seeing. I know some of you guys are using something similar to what is being used on Elite, the flmon program to restart your server. Have any of you noticed if you do not restart the server using that program then your server can get caught in some sort of server loop where it's showing it's live but people have problems connecting? We've been seeing it consistently on Elite. When we change the specks on the server (total players) or do a manual reboot to ensure hidden wreck regeneration, that's when one of our server admins (who remain nameless for now ;0 ) forgets to use that reboot proggy it can hang on the next reboot.
EDIT: Clarification...a manual reboot in this instance only means the flmon program is not running and the server does not restart automatically as if that program WAS live. 'No reboot of the entire computer'

It seems if the flmon tool (or whatever your auto restarting your server with) is used there's no problems with reboots?

Secondly, have you guys been watching closely on campers and how that affects reboots? Not sure if the campers have anything to do with the server getting hung (not enough data supporting it yet) but it's more of a gut feeling.

Feedback folks, I know you guys scan these forums. And no offense if I didn't mention your server.

Stinger,
I am going to assume something, and that is;
"the flmon program to restart your server" really means the Freelancer Server Program, not rebooting the machine it is running on. I say this because I got confused by your using the term reboot: "or do a manual reboot to ensure hidden wreck"

Here's a rundown of how and when on Browclops: 90% of the time there is no physical reboot of the machine itself. I have not experienced any memory leaks or other problems that would warrant a reboot of the machine. When it's time to restart Freelancer Server program I stop the FLAdmin program first, to prevent multiple instances of the Freelancer Server program from starting up, as has happened if I was slow. Then I stop the Freelancer Server program. I do the account backups, then start the Freelancer Server program. I adjust the Description info to reflect the date and time, then hit OK (or whatever it is). Freelancer Server program runs at about 33msec for a few seconds, then drops to 0msec. I adjust the information in the Server News to reflect the restart time and other basic info. Then I start the FLAdmin program. I do this about twice a day, sometimes three if I see lots of newer people.

Roughly three-five times a week I will see that the FLAdmin program has restarted the Freelancer Server program at some point. I do nothing but change the information in the Server News to reflect the latest restart time.

As to campers slowing down the program restart process, I've never seen anything more than about 10 seconds for it to decide 1)I'm ok to shut down or 2)I suck and want to notify Microsoft. It has never hung in the traditional sense (the endless wait)

Hope this helps a little at least.

Browclops
P.S. I changed all references to FLMON to the correct program, FLAdmin v1.0.4, after I woke up and realized I had specified the wrong program. - Browclops

WOW i got noticed
besides that i haven't had a problem really the only complents i been getting are to extend the server and reboot for the wreaks and all

there was a another odd thing that happen untill today didn't notice that (thsi only happen once) on rare ocassions ppl can not come near planet mattahttion becasue they die some werid way all i hear is "sheilds failed" and then i blow up i think it stop after a hour. some one ifomed me it happens on elite all the time but i never ckecked.

now for the reboot problem it never happen to me i don't have the flmon (is a beta or something were can i get it? thx) so i have to reboot the server every 24 hours and reboot my computer every week. before the patch it did do the "hang" were it would not let any one in that only happen a couple of times but with the fladmin it brought it back to life i never had a problem when that resurrect the server.
it been kinda odd but after the patch it seams to fix alot of it i haven't seen much after

there was one VERY RARE anonmaly were some one pick up some loot for a ship and found it had been "corrupted" the name was all symbols and the price was 10,000 it shot like a lavablade with the same damage but i told him to destroy it becasue i though it would make the server chrash so he destroyed it and i nver seen it happen again

Hey Stinger,

We do not use the FLMon program and with a limited number of regular player I'm fairly certain we don't really have any campers out there, assuming you're referring to either wreck or dock campers that is.

Normally, it seems we're good for around 36 - 48 hours without restarting FL Server and it will stay up and live on the global list. After that, it drops from the global server list but we can still connect to it using the IP address in the command line. Once it drops off the global server list it'll stay alive anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days before is drops all currently connected players, giving them the message that the server has crashed. Even after if drops all of the players, FL Server appears to be running fine but nobody can connect to it.

Monitoring network and internet traffic has not revealed anything unusual, and their doesn't appear to be any consistent spike in CPU or Memorey useage before or after the server either drops from the global list or refuses to accept anymore players. Allthough I have noticed that the game connection is MUCH better once the server is no longer active on the global list and stops sending out all those info packets.

We're still running 1.0 on Windows XP Pro and the server is a Pentium 2.4Ghz with 1GB ram and a cable connection.

Have not experienced either problem that you are referring to. Maybe it is your OS that is causing the problems and not freelancer . I currently am using w2k server on one server and w2k pro on the other.

I've definately seen something similar using FLAdmin.

Sometimes if I stop FLSERVER then restart it (rather than letting FLAdmin auto restart it)people don't seem to be able to join - although I've never been able to establish if it's refusing connections or just not showing on the global server.

After stopping it again and letting FLAdmin restart it the players flood back.

I've been too busy to come to this forum...Maintaining my server and clan...

I haven't run across that problem...But I have run across something else...

Since installing the patch...FLMon doesn't seem to be functional at all.

It will load...and it will start the server...but the status bar does nothing.

Haven't actually had a crash in a while....In fact at post time....My server has been running 2 days and 3 hours straight with few complaints of lag since I have been running optimization tools...

Had some bad lag today...but it didn't last long.

I have noticed that when I do actually close the server it doesn't restart automatically now that I think about it. Restarting has no effect on FLMon's functionality.
