Attracting More Players?

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Attracting More Players?

Okay, so I'm running a persistent 24/7 server, with space for 10 players....

How can I attract more people? I have just 8 accounts registered so far, and as far as I can tell people aren't joining because the server is empty (empty server = no MP fun?).

Any hints on how to attract more people?

This is the second thread I've done. the other one kinda got ignored. I also posted it in the ReynenMod thread.

Ina ny case, today seems to have solved it. I now have 30 accounts ^_^

The trick is getting your server near the top of the list and then people don't have to scroll down to find you. Put numbers or squares in front of your name like my server Bobway's Lab. Good Luck!

I am the Bobway

Servers near the top of the list attract more visitors; the further people need to scroll to find you the less likely they'll find you. You'll see most of the full servers are near the top are padding the front of the name with spaces to get a higher listing.

Servers with zero players tend not to attract players. Play your own server and help to create a community environment. Welcome players who join and maybe offer to run a couple of missions with n00bs. People tend to play longer when grouped with other players. The longer you can keep the initial players online the busier the server will look and more visitors it will attract AND the more likely they are to come back.

Help n00bs level up by joining them for missions or helping them get a decent ship but try to draw a balance so they're through low levels but still have something to work towards. If you give every new player $1m they'll not get any sense of achievement and soon get bored. On the flip-side, if they play for 30 mins and leave still at a low level there's less incentive to come back than if, for example, they are level 10 with a Liberty Defender packed will full weapon slots and some idea of what they'd like to do next; if you're grouped when they leave suggest a decent trade route or a good system/base to visit next time they join.

When chatting don't play the "I'm a the big important admin d00d" line; ppl just get pissed off with it. Players on my server generally don't even know I run it; I even use a seperate maxed-out character for doing "admin stuff" like scanning for cheats and stuff so I'm just another player to most people.

Keep the server up 24/7 and try to keep it stable. Most people tend not to want to build up characters across multiple servers and once they find a server they like they'll stick with it. If they find your server is down or performs badly most people will move on and rarely bother coming back. Set your user level accordingly; low limit servers tend to get less visitors but if your server is consistently in the red and badly lagged people won't play it anyway. It's better to start low and tweak the level upwards if latency, RAM and CPU utlisation indicate the server isn't struggling to cope with the load when the server is full.
