Transfering >1000 Charakters to an other Server

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Transfering >1000 Charakters to an other Server

Hi there, first sorry for my bad english (default sentence

We have one of the biggest Server in Germany and want to expand our Network to more than one Server.

But we want that everyone can Play on any Server with a nightly mirrored Character!

So here is the Problem:
If we copy the Chars to an other Server without account.cfg (I think this file contains a server key which it used to build the Directory Names for the fl files)
the Chars cant be used because the new Server search in a different Directory for the Char Data.

If we copy the account.cfg (Serverkey) then all Chars are playable on the new Server but if we connect with both Servers to the Internet the Master Server do wrong things and switches the Servername and IP ... short it doesn't work!

Have anyone more details to solve this Problem ?

thx a lot
greeting from germany

Niwo

This is documented in the README file on the CD. When you transfer characters you can not use the original server the character came from at the same time as the new server.

Thats why the readme says you cant run both, its one or the other not both. No idea if anyone is still working on this. Think it was akataka but no idea if he still is.

In my messing with saved game files I have found that the file name itself isn't important. It is as it was stated by Niwo, the directory names are unique and tied to the server key. The only way currently to transfer players in this case would be to match up each unique player's directories from each server and copy the contents from one to another. But the key is matching the directories from one server to a different directory name on the other. While any code could be written to copy the files, knowing (requires a lot of typing and would have to have new players constantly added manually) or decoding (specialized code for decoding directory names, never heard of any) the directory names is the hard part. I know of no software that does this automatically. I can do this with FLCharEd from JoeBoomz on a tiny scale, manually but that isn't feasible for so many characters.

Of course you can't run the same account IDs on two different servers. The global server gets confused. Similar to issue with more than one server on a LAN. FL is looking for only one flserver on a LAN (not talking internet), two confuses FL.

Would be an excellent idea though to extend an FL community through multiple servers! I wonder if JoeBoomz or AkaTaka can say more on this?

Yup i am sorry to say it can't be done. Each character must be moved sperately. When the --Argonus-- server went down and we tried to move all the characters to The New Argonia Station we couldn't do it when --Argonus-- Was up because the two servers had the same .cfg file and thought they were the same server.

All that would need to be present in a importer tool would be the abilty to copy all the chars across to the respective account folders. Unfortunately you have the problem of the server account number being different for people on different servers and therefore the name of the folder being different.

it can be done the person that wants to do it has to under stand that the fastest way to do it is the charater logs onto the new server with the same charater name that he wants to transfer to that server then you copy the charater file only into that spot then it will work did it for 100 pepole took awhile to do but can be done now to cheap it updated no it would take to long to do all the time u would have to manualy copy it file to where it has to be so the best thing is to take what files you want n tell them there file is at this server now n they would have to play there all the time but if you want more info let me no its not hard to do so good luck n if you have any probs
email me at [email protected] or come to my site n see the server side stuff that i have done @term0shad/lightning/wam site

mess with the best die like the rest or be terminated from the shadows

Hmm.. I haven't tried something like this myself. I think it's fairly safe for me to say you cannot copy your entire MultiPlayer folder to another server and expect it to work properly.

What I expect you CAN get away with is just copying all of your player folders to the new server machine. I do this on a regular basis with the IONCROSS server while testing stuff at home. I'll copy the entire multiplayer folder to my home pc, strip out the flserver.cfg and other files, and just have the actual player folders left over. My test server at home picks up the players without problems and I can log into my account on the IONCROSS server, then disconnect and log into the same account again on my test server. As long as you don't copy the FLServer.cfg file (which I'm sure contains your server name, news, and other configuration settings) and use a different .cfg file for your second server, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Earendil, I'll look into re-enabling player re-naming in the next release of IFSO. I've just had too many requests for it, even though it can cause problems on occasion. I just have to double-check to make sure changing character names doesn't screw up IFSO either

One OTHER thing to try if it still doesn't work would be to copy EVERYTHING, then start up the server and just change your server name and news and that information, then restart FLServer so changes take effect properly. At this point, would it still mess up the global server list?

Joe,
Haven't had any problems with renaming, sort of. I do it in FLCharEd and it updates fine after the change. As for flserver it shows the renamed character after the next reboot. FLSO is cool once the player list is re-generated. I actually have no changes (the previous character name remains) in FLAcctBrowser which means FLConnMon also displays incorrectly. I changed a player's character names after he left his clan and only FLAcctBrowser didn't change the names. I thought it was odd because even the flserver account list shows the change at the next reboot! So far I see no issues with the change except for FLAcctBrowser so inserting it in FLSO shouldn't be a problem.

Those other ideas sound good. I wish I could test it but I can't since I have only one internet pipe (one IP address) and both computers on a home LAN (the readme.htm says it won't work).
