Running FL Server on a dedicated low spec PC

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Running FL Server on a dedicated low spec PC

I have a 450MHz AMD K6-III PC with 128MB RAM running Win98SE. It's on a 11Mbit wireless connection onto a router with a 600Kbit broadband connection.

2 questions.

1. Is this is a suitable config for a dedicated Freelance server? Nothing else running on it.
2. What would be a suitable max number of players?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

We have a Pentium II 400 currently running ours behind a full T-1 and I am going to say that the CPU in both scenarios are the limiting factor.

I took a screen shot of what 3 peeps looks like in ours, and I would have to think that all 3 were involved in some sort of dog fight in their respective systems.

CPU utilization hit 90%. I then began to lag and low and behold was destroyed before hitting anything to try and save myself.

I am curious if anyone has got a formula yet to say x Mhz processor = # of people in the game.

Anyone?

Our server is a P2 Celeron @450MHZ, 368MB Ram and has 99% CPU load when populated with 6 players.

The main constraint on Freelancer servers, at least for the moment until they patch FLServer.exe to support larger numbers of users without crashing, is primarily CPU and secondly RAM.

A K6-300 with so little RAM is certainly not up to the job - at most you might get one or two users connected before suffering from lag.

On my 3.06 Ghz I use for my server, I am running about 50% CPU with 45 players.

Now at first glance it would appear that 30mHz per player is needed, but I have also found that just running the server takes up about 15% of the CPU, even before I get players logged in. Also, I am running Hyperthreaded which the FLServer does utilize.

My best estimate is a 450mhz to 600 mhz just to run the server with a small group of friends. After that you are looking at about 20mHz per additional player.

Now, don't try to run over 45 players on a box until the patch comes out. At 45 players my server is only using once again, 50% CPU, but it is also only using less than half of my upstream of 768k. If I up it to 50 players, the FLServer application itself starts to freek out and usually takes itself down shortly there after.

If you have anymore questions, let me know.

Is that 50% on both processors? (HT Enabled)

Yes it splits the usage equally across both.

I haven't tried with HT disabled yet. If you would like I can switch off HT tonight and get you some perf #'s for that.
