Running a server and playing FL on the same computer?

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

Running a server and playing FL on the same computer?

I know this question has been asked before and I looked for the thread but couldn't find it so if you could please answer me this question I would greatly appreciate it. I have been playing freelancer for a good while now on single player and am immensly enjoying it and by my standards I still have a lot that I want to do. I tried playing mp on a couple of servers with my cable modem connection, but the servers were either laggy or hit or miss if they were there or not. So I decided I would just open my own server on my home computer where a couple of my friends could join whenever. I don't have an extra computer to run the server program on so I just booted it up on my computer and then started up freelancer on the same computer. With just me and one other person playing through lan, it was a little choppy. I was just wondering if running the server program on the same computer that you are playing on is doable, or am I going to have to look for another computer to run the server.

It doable. I run TLR-Gold server on the same comp I play on. Suggestion? Password protect it & keep the numbers down to just enough for your friends.

When I notice my serv er is close to capacity, I don't play until the numbers go down. If I'm playing and I notice lag, I check my server for numbers and if it's up there, I stop playing. Bottom line it is possible, even though Digital Anvil doesn't recommend it. But you have to balance the numbers of players with your computer configuration and if you push the envelop on capacity, it will affect both you and other logging in.

Trial and error method.

Thanks for the reply. I just had a big freelancer lan party at the house last weekend, it was the best lan party in a while. The server ran without a hitch. Thanks

I am trying to do the same sort of thing, but cannot get mp to work. I have finished the single player and would like to play the game without the story line missions. Another thread in the general forum got me the suggestion to use a mod or run the game twith my pc as acting as a server. When I load flserver, I set options to allow players to join, no internet access, max players = 1. the console then shows the named server as connected. Load up Freelancer, select multiplayer, connect to Lan, and there are no servers listed.

My pc is not set up a a server (does it need to be? if so how?), can you help?

ps Admiral Stinger, thanks for help on sorting out mp a/c id problem (another thread)

you have to use your IP and make a startup command line to see it in lan or find it via the server list. Unless you have a lan then it should show up, if not then the ports are blocked, so you will have to get them accessable
