more advanced firewall help needed

I have my server hooked up to my linksys router. to make a long story short I have it's ip address set up ad DMZ, opened the ports 2300 2400 to that ip address, but it is looking for port triggers. One is trigger port range and the other is incoming port range. I put in the above ports in both fields but nobody can access it from the internet.

I need further direction than opening ports and DMZ.

thanks

Here's how I set up my connection on my Linksys Router/Firewall:

1) Change TCP/IP settings for all machines on the LAN from "Obtain IP Address Automatically" to "Use the following IP Address". My server is 192.168.1.110 and my main machine is 192.168.1.100. The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway is 192.168.1.1 (the address of the router).

2) Change "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses:". You can get these from your ISP. I believe they may also be listed in the router configuration somewhere if you've used DHCP previously, but I could be wrong.

3) In the router configuration, disable DHCP. It stops port forwarding from working.

4) In the port forwarding section of the router configuration, enter "Freelancer" as the application, 2302 and 2304 in the port ranges (there's no need to open up the full range of 2300-2400... they're used by direct play. all clients will connect on port 2302; I've yet to see someone connect on anything else), select UDP as the packet type and forward to IP address 192.168.1.110 (the game server). Also check enable. Apply those settings.

The patch cables from both machines are going into ports 1 and 2 on the router. I don't use the DMZ and have no problems whatsoever. The advantage to this is that your server machine is behind the router/firewall and therefore protected. Putting it in the DMZ leaves it open to attack.

Sorry for bother you but ... my server is actually publishing my DMZ IP address (10.x.x.x) ... not the router internet address.

How can I fix it? there is a way to publish my Internet DNS name?

I'm sure that addresses beginning with 10.x.x.x are internal to your ISP (someone correct me if I'm wrong) - they use NAT (Network Address Translation) to mask your real IP address.

Go to www.whatismyipaddress.com to see what your *real* IP address is.

When I look for servers on the internet on my main machine, I can see my server out there, but the IP address it's publishing is my internal LAN address. I'm not sure what address others see, or if the browser records a ping from my machine as I'm blocking WAN requests in the router. As long as you have the router set up correctly to forward ports to the server machine, people will still be able to connect to your server.

Harv

I work for an ISP (Dialup) and we use NAT...So I would imagine a lot of them do.

I'm running a Linksys router and am having NO problems...Once I activated the UDP ports....

On the router setup page....go to Forwarding....

Click View Port Range Forwarding

THis is what you will see in a nutshell:

Cust. App. Ext. Port Protocol TCP Protocol UDP IP Address Enable
Freelancer 2300 to 2400 <check> <Server add> <chk>

CatZone, if you run the game on your LAN, it will find your server on the LAN (with the private address) and the global server (with the public address), but just report the LAN's address (prefering to use the LAN rather than going through the router). Clients outside your LAN will see the public address, which is what gets posted on the global server.
