can you transfer players between servers?

Here SysOps can list their MultiPlayer server info and users can send feedback to their SysOps. Or just talk about the MultiPlayer servers they play on. This is not about MultiPlayer in general - please use the MultiPlayer Forum for that!

can you transfer players between servers?

As the topic says I want to transfer a player to another server? It is only between LAN servers so I don't care if it requires a hack. After playing on a LAN with some mates for ages I have an awesome ship etc. but now I want use that player on my own machine to continue on and then transfer back when we do the LAN thing again. It would be a shame to have all those hours playing go to waste so I was hoping to keep going.

There is a way to keep a running list of what folders belong to what accounts. The method I use is a major pain, but it works. I've made it a part of my weekly maintenance process (backup/cleanup/reboot), so it's become easy for me. If you have a large number of accounts, this probably will be more work than it's worth. I started out with about 15 accounts, and it's at about 30 now.

Here's what I did to start:
1> Copy the entire "Multiplayer" folder to another location as a backup

2> Open up notepad, and list every folder name from within the "Multiplayer" folder in order (one folder name per line).

3> At the server, goto edit-> accounts. List every character name from here below the account folder names you have listed in notepad. If an account has multiple characters, put them on the same line with a seperator.
Example: Name1/Name2/Name3

4> At this point, you should have a list of folder names (0ne name per line), with a list of character names below it (one account per line). You should also have the server, the "multiplayer" folder, and the notepad file open.

5> Shut down the server, and then relaunch it with internet access disabled. Save your notepad file somewhere safe (don't close it), and then open the account edit window for the server.

6> Delete the first account, then use your notepad list to determine which folder was deleted. In the notepad file, copy the character name(s) for that account to the line for that folder.

7> Continue this process untill all folder names have their corresponding character list next to them.

8> Close the server, then copy the entire "Multiplayer" BACKUP folder back to the "Accounts" folder (allow it to overwrite). This will restore all the accounts you just deleted.

9> Save the notepad file, then relaunch the server with internet access enabled.

If you make a mistake during any of this, just go straight to step 8. The important thing to remember here is to make a backup before you start.

I typed all that, and forgot to add the routine I follow now.... oops

Once the initial list is made, it's much easier to add new accounts to it. I run through the following routine once or twice a week. I really don't have a set scedule, as it's easier to take care of it as the new accounts build up.

1> Delete all accounts that have no characters

2> Verify that all accounts in the notepad file still exist in edit->accounts. If any accounts have been removed by players, remove them from the notepad file

3> Make a new backup of the "Multiplayer" folder, and open up the old account list in notepad

4> Relaunch the server with internet access off

5> Using Edit->Accounts, delete all accounts that are listed in the notepad file

6> At this point, you should only have a list of new accounts in the account editor. The "Multiplayer" folder should have a smaller number of folders in it, equal to the number of new accounts.

7> Add all the leftover folder names to the old accont list

8> Follow steps 6-9 from above

So far, the only problem I've had with this method have been accounts that were removed by the players. Step 2 should cover this.

Hi guys!

I have a dilema. Basically what I am trying to do is make a mirror of one game server to another. Keep all the current account in tact but give our members two servers they can play on.

I've tried to copy over the entire Multiplayer folder over from one server to another but when I go to connect to the game on our other server none of the accounts work.

All the accounts are there and they all list in the game server, but when I load the game there is no account listed for my player. I would effectively have to create a new account and start fresh.

Any thoughts?
Tks!

This is copied and pasted straight from the server info file:

To move your accounts from server A to server B:

1> Delete the My Games\Freelancer\Accts\Multiplayer folder in your "My Documents" folder on server B.
2> Copy the My Games\Freelancer\Accts\Multiplayer folder (and all it sub-folders) from your "My Documents" folder on server A to the My Games\Freelancer\Accts\Multiplayer folder in your "My Documents" folder on server B.
3> Once you have moved these accounts from A to B, do not attempt to run servers on both machines at the same time
.

I don't know why, but it clearly states not to run both servers if you copy the accounts this way. You could try having everyone create fresh new accounts on the new server. Once that is done, copy their individual account folders over. If copying the complete account folders doesen't work, try copying the contents of account folders over instead.

I'd do the tsting myself, but I only have one machine for the server, and one for gameplay. All I can do is suggest what I'd try, and hope it helps

Ok I figured it out after an hour of testing. You need the players to login and create an account of the exact name. Then you identify the account on the new server and copy over the .fl file.

I found copying over the entire folder would give me password login errors, which makes sense because there is likely some account information in the name file if you copy that over too.

It's not as smooth as everyone seems to post around here. This took me a fair bit of trial and error and you also need to ID all the acounts that are copied and created.

Yeah, I get the feeling that the folder names are somehow derived from a combination of the player's ID and the server's ID. This would explain why the folder names don't match from one server to another. Ah, well... It's all a learning experience
