**FIX** for many problems playing FL!

Thx to MD (u loser)!

1. Open control panel
2. go to Sound And AUdio Devices
3. On Hardware Tab, in the list click on Audio Codecs
4. Select "Fraunhoffer MPEG Layer ..." codec
5. Click Remove
6. Don't restart even if asked to
7. Open WIndows Explorer
8. In ..<WinDir>\System32\ (or just the system folder, depends on your OS)
folder delete/rename the files "l3codeca.acm" and "l3codecp.acm"
9. Restart WIndows
10. Download "wma8_redist.exe" and "wma9_redist.exe" from Internet location (listed below)
11. Install both packages, first "8" then "9"
12. Open Sound And Audio Devices in Control Panel again
13. On Hardware Tab, in the list, doubleclick the now available
"Fraunhofer..." codec
14. In the codec properties, set priority to "1".
Check the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec's properties
and make sure that the "use this codec" is checked!
15. Start Freelancer, New Game: Sound is working fine now.

Followed all the steps.
Now I only have shoot sound effects.
No speech no music, nothing except shot effects.
edit: there doesn't deem to be a new L3CODECP.ACM in my system32 folder. Is this on purpose?

Check the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec's properties
and make sure that the "use this codec" is checked!

I had only weapon sounds and the codecs setting was "do not use this codec"
After changing it, all sounds begun to work.

EDIT: Spelling... again...

AH! Thats it!
Thanx! Love you all
Wonder why it wasn't enabled in the first place... hmm.
Continuing on my endeavor towards understanding Windows.

Hmmm followed all the steps but now I only hear the weaponsounds.
I use XP and didn't have a MPEG codec with that name. I had another called Radium MPEG Layer-3 Codec 1.2.0.63
Any suggestions what I can do?

Do you have codec packs installed? If so, might want to remove it, Reinstall FL and after that install codec pack WITHOUT mp3 codecs. Might do the job...

Forget this... My own fault - maybe I should read the Readme more often, when having problems. Damn Nimo Codec Pack...

Ok, I tried this and messed up, so I'd like some advice on how to get back on track.

Right now, I get a certain percentage of each voice recording. For example, if a character has a line that lasts 10 seconds, I'll hear about 7 seconds of it and then it cuts out. However, if they only say something like "Good job" I won't hear it at all. Before I tried doing this fix, it was the "normal" random voice, where it cuts in and out without a noticeable pattern.

I did everything you said on that checklist except delete the l3codecP.acm file. When I tried to, it said it was in use, so I just tried renaming it (which seemed to work, I received no error messages). After I restarted and went back to the Codec Properties, I saw the correct Fraun iso II dealy and opened it's properties. However, everytime I made an adjustment (like clicking "Use this codec" and then hitting OK) the Fraun Iso II would disappear off the list. I'd have to close the Audio Codecs page and reopen it to get it to come back. However, it'd just disappear if I tried anything again.

Since then, I redid all the steps (this time successfully deleting both files) but the Fraun iso II doesn't show up. What I had planned to do was reinstall the Frau drivers I had downloaded and then try the steps, hoping that it would take hold this time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ok, I just redid all the steps and I'm getting the same damn error, which is that I can't see the properties of the Fraun is mpeg codec. The page that comes up when I double click the Fraun thing is empty. There's a little drop down list, except clicking on it doesn't drop anything down (although the arrows change directions). There's also a "Settings" button which is greyed out (can't push it). Whether I hit Ok or Cancel, the Fraun name will disappear off the list of Audio Codecs. Heeeeellllpppp meeeeeee!

I also just realized that the Fraun driver I'm seeing isn't in the place it's supposed to be. I thought that it was under Audio Codec Properties (where I had removed it from the first time) when it's actually supposed to be out at that main section....right? I'm talking about the Hardware tab of the Sounds and audio device properties.

Thanks so much for this fix. I was getting major static on the Speech and Sound FX that could only be gotten rid of by mutting them in audio options. It wasn't much fun playing with just that boring "space" music. I wish I could rock out to some pirate rock like... DEF LEPORD, or THE SCORPIANS. I just know that is the kind of music that the corsairs get to bogey down to, why don't I?

So anyway, the static is all gone.

I am having the exact same problem as Jabberwhacky. I played a version of the beta and there was some problems with it including the sound bug so I shrugged it off and figured it would be taken care of by the time of release but when I Downloaded the demo its the same sound problem. I hope they fix this before release or I will probly not pick up my pre-order. If anyone has any idea that would fix this please let me and Jabberwhacky know. Thanks

hmm i had no sounds whatsoever at first wehn i installed the demo.
Here's what I did on my win2k pc

1)have not touched any priority settings for any of the codecs they are all on 11 which happens ot be the shared irq for acpm management on my pc. All I DID do was check they are enabled.
2) I followed the readme instructions for deleting the l3codeca file and installing the wmfdist.exe from the redist folder I also for good measure installed hte windows media codecs file wmpcdcs8.exe thats in the same redist folder.

Result full sound restored
