Two problems that need to be addressed

I recently got a laptop and tried to run freelancer.

Text problem that seems to be because of my graphics card: Intel 945 GM/GU Express Chipset Family.

It seems to be a different from the one that is stickied. Its not really oversized, but its more warped and flashing all over the screen. I've looked at a lot of other posts but they didn't help solve the problem. One thing that helped was downloading the intel driver for Vista which helped get rid of the siezure-like warping a little bit.

Another problem is my computer runs Vista.

So like many others, i can't join freelancer servers. I have no problem with the global server. I've tried the firewall thing but to no avail.

edit* someone says they were able to connect after uninstalling Norton. Can anyone confirm this. Must i uninstall it or can i simply turn it off (which doesn't seem to work sigh)

Hopefully somone will please help me thnx.

seconded, sorry i can't offer any useful advice - seems that almost any game that ran in XP will have a problem that needs fixed in Vista. backwards compatibility... wazzat?

of course XP will do everything vista does, except run the boycotted/half-heartedly supported directx10 standard, and '3d desktop' which is supposed to be somehow useful.... and some things that vista won't, like leaving it up to you how to manage intellectual property.

Should right click the Freelancer icon and go to props, then to compatibility, check mark "run this program in compatibility mode for:" then pick XP. I don't own vista but that's really the only answer I could give you as far as fixing it. Otherwise you'll have to live with it.

I also just bought my first laptop, sadly the only OS available anymore is Vista. I went to the device manager and wrote down all the hardware names, then bought a new harddrive (saved the vista one because I could return it in 14 days if not satisfied, heh) and installed XP. It took many days to get it set up right, but Freelancer now works on it (vista would sit at the games screen and show no pings, or in LAN mode it would not show any server).

I discovered http://www.driversguide.com and it appears to be the premier way to search for all the hardware on your new computer. I spent days searching for a few of the things, it told me the rest of them in 10 seconds. Of course, you have to give them $29.95 to actually download the packages, still waiting for my pay-pal to clear to see if this is legit.

This was written by Blackbeard, and it has worked for more than a few Vista users I know.
---------------

first off delete the rubbish antivirus that came with it it sucks your internet connection dry

hit the windows key and go to games:

highlight play and go to edit:

go on the compatability tab and check run this as an administrator.

this should then sort freelancer, if it doesn't let me know there a few other things you can try, BB

ps hope this helps you out

driverguide.com public l/p is temp / 512 and has been for ages.

also, i do not like that site much - i've only ever used it for obsolete peripherals w/o cds, XP compatible drivers etc.. i certainly can't see the sense in giving them 30 dollars for software that they did not write and have no claim to.

Don't manufacturers bother providing XP drivers for laptop owners that want to go back to XP Home/Pro? That's annoying.
