ATI Radeon 9200SE - some issues

Specs:

Pentium D 805
Asus P5V800-MX
Sapphire Radeon 9200SE 128 meg AGP8X graphics card
512 megs DDR RAM

So.

I installed Windows XP on it + SP2 and the VIA Hyperion drivers to make sure the AGP Miniport worked OK and everything. I installed a special version of the Catalyst 6.11s provided on ATI's website which are designed to work with the 9200 series of cards.

My problem is, if I change 3d graphics settings, and use anything besides "Application controlled" for Antialiasing or Anisotropic filtering the game becomes embarrassingly choppy. Considering that Freelancer was designed to work properly with 16 meg video cards on Pentium III 700 processors this is actually kind of annoying.

I'm using the 1024x768 resolution for the game.

Any suggestions? I haven't really monkeyed with the AGP aperture or anything like that.

I have a Radeon 9250, everything works for me, but i didn't install catalyst. maybe it's conflicting or something.

Weirdly, it's spiffy and jim-dandy with 800x600. I checked that the AGP card was in 8X mode and that the DirectX version was 9.0c - so nothing unusual there.

I had everything going well with 1024x768x32 and max performance settings (Radeon 9250 with 128 MB RAM)

Update - swapped in a Geforce 3 Ti200 and it's astonishly non-choppy, and it runs fine at 1024x768. I wonder if driver bloat is the issue with these new cards?

I have a X1600 pro and if I install Catalyst Control it slows my whole system down and I can't even play any game. I just install the drivers and I am fine. So it has to be the Catalyst Control center that is causing problems. So I suggest stay away from the Catalyst Control and just use the drivers.

I have XPHome SP2

TBH u should really put ur 9200 to sleep..it's rather out-dated.

You can pick up GF 7600GT's for about £110 (translate to ur own currency) much better than what u've got

Seems to depend on your system with catalyst... I use it on my PIII with my radeon 8500 and it works beautifully.

My X2 3800+ with the X1950 Pro 512 MB and the Catalyst installed runs bueatifly too. (though you'd expect it too with that card )
