Vanilla Error

Both I and some of my friends have been having this weird little problem...

Effectively, Freelancer runs fine when running Evolutions 2.29, but running Vanilla or using minor mods (ie. ones that don't change much) causes the game to crash. Here's the sequence of events:

1. Start FL.
2. Intro cutscenes run (unskippable)
3. The 'Freelancer' flash screen that you get prior to the main menu appearing shows up for a few seconds.
4. Freelancer quits to the desktop. For a few seconds, it appears on the taskbar, then that vanishes with a 'Please send this to report to Microsoft' message.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Additional note. With all mods deactivated, loading up Datastorm produces the 2.29 map.

have you tried using Restore Backups in mod manager and installing the SDK?

Check your saved games folder for any saved games as well.

Thanks, guys. Not sure what did it (all saved games deleted and SDK installed), but Vanilla runs fine now.

EDIT: Spoke too soon. FL starts fine, but clicking on new game produces much the same result as before.

if you run FLspit.vbs after crashing and paste the latest time stamped session from the error log it creates here you will be helping us help you its a server debugger, but it actually works with both server and client EXEs

Pretty short and sweet...

Reinstall the game and then apply the QuickFix patch. Your problem is that there are parts of Evolutions left over in the vanilla install when you try to play the normal game.

Done. No change in reaction, but FLspit gives me something different now...

other than deleting your savegames i don't know anything that might help - i would definitely check to see if datastorm.fl is there in your savegames, and delete restart.fl & the autosave too

If nothing else works I suggest uninstalling the game with add/remove programs, then killing the Microsoft Games\Freelancer folder, and getting rid of any *.fl files in your My Games folder.

Then reinstall Freelancer and use the QuickFix patch or the SDK 1.5 according to preference.

Wow the problem was I still had savegames installed from the last time I had Freelancer installed, from March 2004!?! Deleteing these old saves did the trick thank you, I never would have imagined that anything was left from way back then.

I remember I had this problem a few years ago as well. If I recall correctly, uninstalling, deleting my save files, deleting all my mods and pretty much starting EVERYTHING from scratch did the trick. Could've been overkill, but that's how I fixed it.

Hope this helps.
