Here is some additional info on Fenwood's problem:

He is using windows 2000, no firewall soft or hardware...

We are trying to help him but ran out of options for a possible solution...

Is there maybe a known issue with windows 2000 and FL ???

just the typical questions:
any viruses?
any other programs running that use the bandwidth? (AIM, YM, MSM, IRC, etc.)
any other programs using CPU cycles? (virus scanner, cd player, etc.)

I believe many, many other people are having this problem. I just posted a reply about it to this thread which is a sticky in this forum (that I think originally was regarding firewall-related problems).

The game really doesn't give you much to go on for solving this one. I run Windows XP and get the error, so I doubt it's OS-dependent. I don't know if anything else can really be said about the problem for sure at this time though.

i know its a standard answer, like two aspirin and call me in the morning, but hav you installed the EOA's FL SDK 1.5b

Cold Void,

Correct me if I am wrong.

I was under the impression that whenever someone uses SDK, it need's to be incorporated into the mod (serverside & client side) he is using to prevent ctd's...

Prolix,

I am amazed that this problem is affecting more players then I imagined.
Fenwood has sent in a report to Microsoft and they replied that they are working on a solution.
Let's see if this is just a way to keep customers happy or if they will truly do something about it...

You know, I did actually run Freelancer with the QuickFix installed, and I believe that included the SDK. That was a good point though, because I only learned about the SDK yesterday (when I found the Reactor while searching for a possible fix).

Maybe I should encourage the people experiencing this to tell MS about it as well.

Anyway, on to an important update: I decided to reinstall Windows a couple of hours ago.
GOOD NEWS! Freelancer connected to an Internet server! I created a character on the server called "Oskaloosa", and easily launched to space, gated from Manhattan to West Point, and re-docked. No problems, as hoped for. It's a low-ping server for me, supposedly in Iowa & I live in Minnesota near the Twin Cities.

For now, I have only installed XP w/SP1, DirectX 9.0c, video/audio/NIC/USB drivers and the NVIDIA ForceWare firewall, Firefox 1.5 (doubt this was interfering anyway!)... pretty sure that's about it. I honestly don't know what's different about my PC now, but I will attempt to find out.

My firewall is also cranked up to high (stealthed ports, no unexpected inbound connections, etc.), and Freelancer.exe is just excepted, so I don't think a software firewall is causing this.

I am going to continue doing Windows/MicrosoftUpdate visits until I'm patched up, checking connectivity in-game on occasion. Then I'll add Freelancer stuff like the QuickFix, and finally I'll get some of my other everyday applications reloaded. If I can still play FL successfully after a day or two, that'll be great, but I'll have no idea what breaks it in the first place =P

You dont mention anything about allowing Direct play on your firewall, you will need this to be an "exception" as well

I'm not very intelligent in these things but i've had problems too, just make sure that there are no programs running in the background like MSN or Yahoo and then think of any oher things you have that use the internet too and turn them off or deactivate them then see if it works

I'll have to check on whether my firewall lets DirectPlay through. I don't know if that's a program-based exception, or if there are DirectPlay ports I need to open up.

Although this can't be affecting me anymore, since Freelancer is working now. Still, sounds like a good idea.
