Slow-down, speed up, frame skip issues

I'm new here and I'm not much of a technical whiz so if someone could help me I'd appreciate it greatly. Freelancer's been working fine for several months, even though I just got it to recognize my video card(I'm running a GeForce FX Go5200, Pentium 4 3.06ghz, 512mb of ram), just recently it started having a constant problem with slowing down, then suddenly speeding up and skipping frames as I approached trade lanes. It does this all the time, during cut-scenes, just flying around. I'm not even in combat and it does it. I love this game so I'm kinda going out of my mind here. If anyone could shed some light on my problem I'd really appreciate it.

I've got almost the same setup in my Latitude 5160 (3.2 v 3.0P4), and I'm not having those issues- I only get a little sound sync problem during the cutscenes. Maybe you're trying to run it at too high a resolution for your system. Try dropping the resolution to 800x600x32 and reducing the 'extras' (dust, detail level, etc.)

Thanks for the advice. I already tried it at 800 by 600x16, yanked down my detail levels, turned off unnecessary background programs and it keeps slowing down and speeding up. It's just weird, mine was running exactly as you described yours, all that I ever had trouble with was my voice sync. Just out of the blue it starts screwing with me. Before the only slowdown issues I had were in certain nebulas during combat.

Sounds like a codec-related problem.
Try reinstalling directX 9.c first, latest edition (december 2005). Just download it, double click.
If this does not help, (re-)install Windows Media Player 10
