HTML code in text?

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

HTML code in text?

Im getting all sorts of HTML code in text for weapon descriptions in the like. It comes up at the start and end. It's also screwing up the multiplayer bit at the main menu, and lord knows what else.

I'v looked and cant find a topic on this so i'd be grateful for any solutions!

Cheers

If you're playing a mod: it's most probably a mistake in the mod. Older mods often had leftovers of code in the Info-Cards
If you are on vanilla FL (i.e. unmodded): delete the folders with the game's installation and your savegames (you may keep a copy somewhere else) and reinstall the game.

It happened without any mod installed. (Tho i am running TNG 2.7.6 at the mo and the problem persists.)
I've tryed reinstalling the game and the mod to no avvail.
Starting to annoy me a bit. I've also discovered its doing the same thing with chat/universe announcement text etc in multiplayer mode.

... hmmm ...
Your problem is afaik not a bug of the game (I think there is only one jumphole somewhere with htlm-leftovers). I have seen such mistakes in early mods - that was before the modders got some handy editing-tools.
Are you sure you did a reinstall exactly as described many times here on TLR ?
Example from Crossfire MOd:

Some MOD's need a clean install of Freelancer...
Especially if you have used any MOD's before you need to do a clean install of Freelancer.
By clean I mean make sure you get a nice shinny new set of files.

1st... Delete your Freelancer folder.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer
Delete your Freelancer folder instead of uninstalling Freelancer to make sure there are no files that sometimes can get left behind after an uninstall, unless you check to make sure there are no files left in the Freelancer folder after you do a uninstall...

2nd... Delete or move any previous saved games.
C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Accts
Singleplayer and Multiplayer folders.
If you don't move or delete your saved games they can cause a conflict and will make Freelancer crash, guaranteed!

3rd... Install Freelancer from the CD.
The Crossfire MOD has the Unofficial patch by Buck Danny built into the MOD so you don't have to install the Freelancer SDK v1.3

If you don't all the steps above you will probably experience a crash or other problems.

4th... Then activate the MOD in the Mod Manager.

5th... Have a blast.

EDIT: Install FL SDK 1.5 as well

Is it possible to be a problem with the .xml files not being read correctly?
As the first line in all the html problems i've seen so far is:
' ? xml version "1.0" '
or something to that effect.

Any ideas?

Post Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:25 am

I have no idea - sorry
But I sent a PM to one of the XML-wizards on this site asking him to pay attention to your problem.

What operating system are you running ? What are the specs of your computer ?

Post Thu Sep 15, 2005 4:57 am

1. Reinstall the game. Make sure to delete all savegames (My Documents/My Games/Freelancer/after that it's obvious- delete everything in the savegames folder).

The XML files are run through freelancer.exe, but one or more DLLs in the game controls how they're translated. I believe Engbase.dll is the key for English installs of the game. If this is corrupt, then it won't work right. We're talking about a parsing error, which may be either the main EXE or in the DLL that controls this behavior.

2. Check your machine for viruses, spy-ware and ad-ware lately?

3. Updated Windows lately?

Other than that... dunno, honestly. I suppose some other, legitimate package might interfere with XML translation, but I can't think what. I have lots of web browsers and other things on this box, but none of them have even slightly bothered FL. 'Course, I go out've my way to keep this box clean and fit, too.

Thanks for your help guys.
I'll try the virus and adware scans, tho im sure windows is totally up to date.
I'll take the game along to my brothers tonight and see if the same problem happens on his computer. Hopefully it doesnt.

Will report back.

Well, the game is fine on my brothers machine.
No html code whatsoever, running flawlessly.

Another reinstall following the above steps to the letter, to no avvail.
And my comp is virus/adware free according to norton/adaware...

*wonders what the hell it could be*

I gave freelancer to a friend of mine, and he's got the same problem. I can verify that the computer is clean, all drivers are up to date, and that reinstalling doesn't change this problem.

However, there's one difference between our two computers; He's a firefox user, I'm not. Could that have any relation to the way XML is parsed on a local machine? (Being a diehard IE supporter, I have no idea what the evil appendages of a third-party browser may do.)

All you need to do is download the Microsoft XML Parser service pack, found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info ... msxml3.msi

If that doesn't work, simply go to www.microsoft.com and search for "msxml3.msi" .

I have the same problem.
Did msxml3.msi help you?
I installed the one from the freelancer cd but it made no difference
