*FIX* MP Internet Connection Issues - FIREWALLS

The place to ask for technical help with running the demo or the full game...

Post Fri Jun 09, 2006 10:28 am

Thats IT. Freelancer's screwed. I even tried switching my firewall off (risking my computer forever) and FL still doesn't work online. Im helpless!

Post Fri Jun 09, 2006 2:59 pm

I'm not a tech, however I hope this post helps some.
Two days ago while playing on a server
my connection suddenly became unusually red. I exited, used my
spyware removal program (adaware) , defragged and decided
to return. Only problem was that the global server only showed
two servers I had manually lanned to the game EXE.
So I removed the manual lan data , and tried again. Now the
global server showed connecting to nothing like the rest of the
posters here. The firewall totally turned off made no
difference.
Since it happened 2 days ago, I tried a system restore from
5 days ago ...still no joy.
I then tried a Freelancer re-install, no difference.
I updated my video drivers, made sure directx was up to date
and re-installed directX. Still no joy.
Going thru Freelancer withdrawal I then Totally Uninstalled
Freelancer (and the mod -manager) completely and re-installed it.
Via Lancers got the newest SDK and Mod Manager
I had printed out my MP Account ID so I loaded the old ID.
Without a mods loaded I joined the global server and bingo I
was back. Except ...It said I never played on any of the servers
I play at. I rechecked the account id repeatedly...I had typed
it right.
Now I have the FLServerConnector by crabtree on my machine. I've just
been too lazy to copy all the servers I play on in it. I typed my
ips in and once in lan it still showed unvisited. HOWEVER, the
game servers still had my ships in them:-).
I'm convinced this is a globalserver hiccup and suggest using the
crabtree FLServerconnector to join the servers. As a added benefit I
noticed a better connection to the servers. On my clans page I added
a server ip list http://www.decreemc.com/nbsflserver.html . I'd respectfully suggest this be done game wide for the global server may hiccup or crash or just be discontinued at any time.

I'll try completely reinstalling it and the new FLMM. Maybe that will help, thanks

Likewise! I've tried everything with no prevail. Even switching my firewall off doesn't solve it. And it worked completely fine on my old rusty 5 year old pc!

This is such bull****. My freelancer was working fine on the internet until yesterday when I tried to connect but it couldnt connect to the global server. Is there anyway I can fix this without deleting my character on the server as I am a high level and do not want to waste it. Please if you can reply in simple terms as I am not a conputer wiz at all.

Cheers

The GS is down today, but in case some of you still have the issue with the connecting to GS and nothing happening, you can try this...

click start
click run
type this in the box: regsvr32 dpnet.dll
hit enter
this only has to be done one time

This will correct the problem with directplay which causes this problem in some cases.

I want to share a bit of good news with all my fellow suffering FL players... I too have been having these problems - I couldn't even connect to the server on my own machine. I'm not the most knowledgeable about networking but I do know the basics & every *other* program on the machine worked fine. Then, in a desperate bid, I stumbled across a post in the Relic Forums from 04 where the poster was having a problem with Homeworld. The key was that I was getting the same error message in DxDiag - Networking when I would manually test DirectPlay (stupid error!) He figured out his problem: disable UPnP on the router. I tried this & all is golden over here! Individual's mileage may vary with this, but I am posting it in the hopes that it will help *some* people deal with this crud.

I'm just going to shoot in the dark here, but is it possible that the no cd exe stops the multiplayer from working? I borrowed the game from one of my friends and used that. SP works beautifuly, but when I click MP it freezes while saying it's connecting to global server.

p.s. sorry if we're not supposed to talk about cracks, but i figure it's a valid topic given a lot of kids here prolly use it

Well I got the original disc, and ive even tried the hack just to see if the error was my disc - and it wasn't. A friend of mine got a new PC and his worked - is this just some generation of PC problem or what?

I would do anything (ok, maybe not anything) to be able to play FL online again.

hi, i just installed freelancer (i had it installed before and it worked then..) and i downloaded FLMM 1.3, also i downloaded the unofficial 1.4 patch for freelancer. Now when i run freelancer it still says v1.0 (this is after i copied the Date and EXE files from the patch to my freelancer folder). Also when i try playing multiplayer it starts lagging and will search try to connect to global server...which will never happen. Can some1 please help me to play online?

ps: i already tried it without Personal Mcafee firewall...

Try what is here, if you still have a problem post it here and someone smarter than me will try to help...

__________________________________________________________________

There are times when you have to start clean...
There can be several reasons for having problems so I won't go into detail but follow the steps listed here and you should be up and running again.

Some Mod's need a clean install of Freelancer before you do anything...
And there are times when you just have to delete everything inclucing your Freelancer folder and even sometimes you even have to uninstall the Mod Manager and then reinstall because of corruption and then reinstall everything again.

Especially if you have used any Mod's before you need to do a clean install of Freelancer because sometimes not all the files especially custom DLL files get removed if you just do an unstall.

By clean I mean make sure you get a nice shinny new set of files without any corrupt files left behind by just doing an uninstall/reinstall.
If you just uninstall Freelancer there may be some files left from the modified files (Mod's) in the Freelancer folder. This happens sometimes when you use Mod's...

Don't worry just delete your Freelancer folder this will not cause any problems.
By default your Freelancer game files will be installed and can be located at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer

1... Deactivate any Mod's in the Freelancer Mod Manager if you have activated any.

2... Delete your Freelancer folder located at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer
* I'll say this again because sometimes it's important to... Delete your Freelancer folder instead of uninstalling Freelancer to make sure there are no files that sometimes can get left behind after an uninstall, unless you check to make sure there are no files left in the Freelancer folders after you do a uninstall...

3... Delete or move any previous saved games... move the saved games to a new folder or delete all the files in your saved games folders.
Saved games are located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Accts
Both, the Singleplayer and Multiplayer folders.
If you play online Multiplayer the saved characters are saved by the server you play on.
If you don't move or delete your saved games they can cause a conflict and will make Freelancer crash, this is guaranteed!
Why? Because there will be new ships, equipment and other goodies that will not be in your saved game files...

* When you activate a Mod you will need to start a new game.

4... Install Freelancer again with the Freelancer CD.

5... Install the Freelancer QuickFix by Louva-Deus after you re-install Freelancer and before you activate the Mod...
* Some Mod's need the QuickFix installed into your Freelancer folder or they won't work, and it don't hurt to install the QuickFix anyway because it fixes some of the bugs in the original Freelancer files.
* The QuickFix is an exe file...double left click on the file QuickFix-v1.0c.exe and browse to your Freelancer folder and install the Freelancer QuickFix in that folder.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer
* By default the QuickFix installer will select the default Freelancer folder
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer
You can download the Freelancer QuickFix-v1.0c here

Freelancer QuickFix is a game patch for Freelancer that 'quickly fixes' a ton of stuff in the game. Here is what is included in the QuickFix package:
* 3D Sound has been Disabled (Which fixes many sound problems for most people).
* Advanced Graphics.
* Advanced Error Logging (Which makes troubleshooting problems easier).
* Updated/Fixed freelancer.ini file.
* Updated video hardware support.
* Includes over 2000 code fixes from the Freelancer SDK v1.3b.
* Includes the battleship mismatched loadout crash fix (New!!).
* Includes Freelancer Web Launcher v3.1.1.0 (see weblaunch.txt) (New!!).
* The installer adds several new links to the Freelancer Web Links folder in your Start Menu (New!!).

If you don't do all the steps above you will probably experience a crash or several other problems.

6... Then activate the Mod if you are going to use a Mod using the Freelancer Mod Manager v1.3 which you can download here.

7... Have a blast.

Version 1.4 ???
Version 1.4 of what, a Mod?
There's no version 1.4 of Freelancer unless you are using a Mod that changes it's version number.

So, if you followed my instructions exactly as they are step by step something else is wrong.

You will have to explain exactly what you are trying to do, what you are trying to install, and if you are trying to use a Mod you will have to explain that too... such as what's the Mod's name and version number.
