Freelancer wont stay connected on vista

I've tried just about everything i know, but cannot get it to keep a connection to a multiplayer server! Lan or Otherwise

The Problem:

I join a server, everything is great. I can go to the bar, look at weapons, ships, etc. Then I launch. A few seconds later, once I'm out in space, I get a connection problem icon. 30 or so seconds later, the connection times out.

I can, however, join a server that I created on the local vista machine. Anyone else trys to join and they time out. Even a client running XP.

What I've Tried:

Turn off Firewall/Windows Defender/UAC and uninstalled ESET's NOD32 antivirus.
Disable IP version 6 by unchecking the boxes in network properties, and adding a registery entry to disable all ipv6 and use ipv4 by default
Run in compatibility mode (2000 and XP sp2)
Both not patched and 1.1 patch
Installed Directx 9
Installed and ran while logged in as administrator

I'm all out of ideas, and the general consensus around other forums is "I uninstalled Norton and it worked great!"

Do you have norton?

Could it possibly just be your connection crapping out a lot? If you play other games online, do you get this issue too?

No, I use NOD32, but have uninstalled it, restarted, to try to play freelancer.

I don't think its the connection, The problem is the same with LAN or INTERNET gameplay. Not to mention I play TF2, UT2004, etc etc etc... which all work fine.

Did you get this game to connect to multiplayer servers using Vista?

I had to get rid of the antivirus entirely (uninstall thae darn thing) and set the properties of freelancer to run with XP compatibillity and in admin mode
didn't work on Vista until I did all that
