I found a savegame on Freelancer Portal that gives you a huge limit before you gain the next level and the demo quits. I don't know if this is big news, but thought I'd post it.

Just downlaod it and place it in your My Documents/My Games/Freelancer Trial/Accts/SinglePlayer folder.

Also, if anyone knows where to find a mod, or how to make one, that makes more ships available without making them ridiculously affordable, I'd be very interested. I know not many people care about the demo anymore, but there are those of us who can't scrape the cash for the full version together . . . yet.
