*NEW* Lights and Ship Speed

Hi all,

In my efforts to make my Anubis the nicest looking one there is, I wanted to change the ugly slow blinking yellow orbs they call running lights to something more cool.

If you go into light_equip.ini you can create your own lights or edit others, blah blah it's easy you'll figure it out. The hard part is - now how do I alter which lights are on a ship. The answer - goods.ini. That's right - anything you specifiy as an "addon" in goods.ini is automatically brought over with the ship at time of purchase. So the bad news is that I had to re-purchase a new Anubis to get the new lights I stuck on it. The good news is that we can set up ship to come with the weapons and equipment of our choice at purchase time.

Item #2 - Speed...

Everyone is in search of the elusive cruse speed modifier... those who can't find it but wanna go faster have increased their thruster output... but of course that's a pain while in combat... you NEED your thrusters.

Calm yourself, Child - for I have the answer...

... Reverse.

That's right - nobody uses it, there's no reason for it. Until now. Go to the engine of your choice and change the Reverse_Fraction from 0.nnnnn (whatever it is now it's small) to -100. That's right, Negative One Hundred.

Now, when you hit "Reverse" you go forwards at 990, and you can keep your thruster for combat use

Enjoy!

nah, my burner aready makes me go 3 times the speed of light

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 12:34 am

kewl idea though

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 12:36 am

how did you manage to make your thurster that fast?

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 12:38 am

well the point is you can set it to whatever - and use it instead of your thrusters.

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 12:39 am

i have my thurter at 990ms how do i make them faaaaaaster?

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 1:34 am

990m/s is the velocity limit.

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 1:36 am

so there is no way to travel faster without using tradelanes?

Hey, great idea.

Unfortunately, I actually use reverse a lot in combat for turning and such.

I also use it when I want to stop in a good location under a battleship to blow it up.

Nice catch!

Btw Pook, which file(s) did you edit and how do you know which engine goes with which ship?

Can you add NEW engines that are buyable?

Post Sun Mar 09, 2003 3:56 am

Actually, for most of the ships, you can tell what it is from the little abbreviation after ge_. IE, ge_nb_engine_01 is the Nomad Battleship's engine, and ge_ob_engine_01 is the Osiris's engine.

Ok, I just tried out this idea and WOW is it cool.

Need to get somewhere fast? Hit X and ZIP there!

Pook, can you tell us more about what you did regarding lights?

I'm trying to spruce up my Sabre and a few lights would probably help.

Sure:

First I created some new lights:

[Light
nickname = CustomHeadlight
glow_color = 255, 255, 255
color = 155, 155, 155
bulb_size = 0.500000
glow_size = 3.000000
flare_cone = 30, 0

[Light
nickname = CustomRunningLightRed
bulb_size = 0.5
glow_size = 0.5
color = 255, 64, 64
flare_cone = 120, 90
min_color = 16, 0, 0
avg_delay = 1.000000
blink_duration = 0.100000

[Light
nickname = CustomRunningLightGreen
bulb_size = 0.5
glow_size = 0.5
color = 64, 255, 64
flare_cone = 120, 90
min_color = 0, 16, 0
avg_delay = 1.000000
blink_duration = 0.100000

[Light
nickname = CustomRunningLightBlue
bulb_size = 0.5
glow_size = 0.5
color = 64, 64, 255
flare_cone = 120, 90
min_color = 0, 0, 16
avg_delay = 1.000000
blink_duration = 0.100000

[Light
nickname = CustomRunningLightWhite
bulb_size = 0.5
glow_size = 0.5
color = 255, 255, 255
flare_cone = 120, 90
min_color = 16, 16, 16
avg_delay = 1.000000
blink_duration = 0.100000

[Light
nickname = CustomDockingLight
always_on = false
docking_light = true
bulb_size = 1
glow_size = 0.5
color = 64, 64, 255
flare_cone = 120, 90
min_color = 0, 0, 0
avg_delay = 0.200000
blink_duration = 0.200000

Basically I reduced the bulb and glow size - to make them look more realistic (imo), then I changed the blink duration to make them actually "Blink". By setting the min_color very low... they turn almost all the way off - its a cool effect. The color attributes are of course R, G, B - each one 0 to 255. (i.e. 255,0,0 is red - 0,255,0 is green - 0,0,255 is blue - 0,0,0 is black - 255,255,255 is white)

Then I assigned them to the Anubis in the goods.ini file. (You have to buy a new ship to get the new lights)

[Good
nickname = oe_package
category = ship
hull = oe_hull
addon = ge_oe_engine_01, internal, 1
addon = or_elite_power01, internal, 1
addon = ge_s_scanner_01, internal, 1
addon = ge_s_tractor_01, internal, 1
addon = order_shield, HpShield01, 1
addon = CustomHeadlight, HpHeadlight, 1
addon = CustomDockingLight, HpRunningLight01, 1
addon = CustomDockingLight, HpRunningLight02, 1
addon = CustomRunningLightGreen, HpRunningLight03, 1
addon = CustomRunningLightWhite, HpRunningLight04, 1
addon = CustomRunningLightRed, HpRunningLight05, 1
addon = CustomRunningLightWhite, HpRunningLight06, 1
addon = contrail01, HpContrail02, 1
addon = contrail01, HpContrail03, 1
addon = CustomDockingLight, HpDockLight01, 1
addon = CustomDockingLight, HpDockLight02, 1

The effect ends up with the left wing having a green strobe, the right wing a red, and the tail and belly a white. The Docking lights are blue. Running lights "Blink" instead of "Fading in and out" like the OEM lights. Docking lights blink very fast.

If you guys are really interested I could post a link to a small .WMV video file and you could see it - but it's prolly easier to just try it out for yourself .

Note -
You don't HAVE to create custom lights and buy a new ship - you could edit the existing lights and have it take effect immediately. I created Custom lights so that my changes would only effect me and not all the other ships.

If this were to be a "MP Friendly" mod it would probably be safer to just alter all the existing lights... so all strobes in the game get the cooler effect but there wouldn't be anything new to confuse the server.
