Very cool but what about animation data?
Some ships have animations, for instance, when you jetison cargo, you see bay doors opening and closing. Will this be lost?

HCl: YOU DA MAN =D

After reading you had some tool in the works for the models and stuff I immediatly started creating a model for a ship... Now I am not making a lot of progress as my 3d skills suck, but i am still anxious to try it out and see it in-game.

I bet a load of people will love you for this =)

Thanks Hcl for the wonderful work you do. I have a little question about the .utf files in the Audio directory: I guess it will work with your new program, right? And did you take a look there? It should contain all the in-game voices and could be useful to change those annoying all-the-same dialog voices at stations

Indeed, the conversion process itself will most likely discard animation data and such, so it'll probably be the work of an UTF editor to add those animation chunks in. I'll be able to give more details when i reach that part, my priorities regarding ships are: mesh format -> hardpoints / mount points -> animations.

I'll be working on a Milkshape plugin because it's the only 3d software i have installed here. After i finish documenting the format and release the source code of the Milkshape exporter, somebody else will be able to work out on plugins for other 3d software.. i hope my humble contributions for the FL community will turn out to be useful regardless of the 3d software you use

Also, yes, the UTF editor should allow you to add / remove .wav files from the .utf files

God, this is going to be nice to have. I must find myself a way to import Milkshape 3D models soon btw, did Microsoft/Anvil tell you what they used to model the stock models in the game? It would make things alot easier if we knew. Its porbably posted here, but I am too busy to go hunting for a few words. sorry and thanks.

I've been trying to work out the format too, although I'm not as far into it as HCL is (good work btw, you seem to have a talent for file format cracking!). I'll be writing a plugin for my 3d software (see my webpage) as soon as there is enough documentation to work on, I guess I could write one for max too as that's installed somewhere in my lab and I think I have the sdk around too.
Out of interest HCL, does the format follow a chunk like strucutre with blocks that state how many bytes they use up and maybe an ID tag? If so, If you could let me know the address of the first block then that would help my own decrypting effort.

Cheers,

Tim.

what do the others of you think about it? i welcome critizism and comments.

i haven't decided what to call it yet. neither do i have decided what kind of ship it will be. i was thinking a freighter since i like turrets

Is it done yet??
Cus i really want to be able to quickly and easily edit the textures for ships and characters without lots of fiddling around with decompression/recompression tools.
I'm not interested in doing new ship meshes as yet but it's a future possibility. Mainly I just want to make a custom skin for my character and ship, you know a pure black Sabre is gonna DAMN cool and a black and silver flight suit to go with it is an added bonus.
So one app that can import and export the textures would be great.
