Speed mod possibilties?

My biggest complaint with FL is the fact that EVERY ship flies at the same speed.
honestly, its pretty stupid in my mind...

SO, I'm curious, what controls that value? and is it possible to assign each ship a unique speed value.

does each ship have its own accessable data file? or is some weird global thing that makes no sense... ?

thanks!

ok, I hear that "in shiparch.ini, every ship has a line that says linear_drag = 1.000000"

which means that each ship can have that number changed, and it modifies how fast they go...

good news is, you can change ship speeds.

bad news is, its client controled, which means you can do this, and then go play on servers and contol that setting regardless of server controls.

I hope to god that DA puts out a CRC checking tool or something like punkbuster.

Now...

I wonder if this "linear_drag = 1.000000" value effects crusing or trade lanes...

if it really is client controlled, as you say - that's pretty much hosed most of what we want to modify. That'd be a really shortsighted mistake considering how easy that would be to have incorporated.

i dont think u can change that client-side, its like changing client-side so u can buy a battleship on for example, manhattan and then take of, it will either crash your freelancer copy or the server

You can modified MP ship speeds client side, which sucks... But, I'm working on a mod right now to change the speeds anyway. Well its not just the speeds but the entire balance as well. Changing just the speeds without changing cargo, armor, hitpoints, hardpoints, etc would be just as bad.

This thing with "Linear_drag" is wrong. In the Folder Data\Equipment is a file called 'Engine_Equip.ini'. Decrypt it with BIni and open it. Each [Engine-Entry has an variable called 'Max_Force', which is the same at almost every entry there. Guess it, this is the basic engine speed, I tried it out and flew 100 m/s with the Rhino

I already tried many ways of speed mods, I have to say, it does not work very well at all. Battles are seemingly impossible. and just ruins the fun of the game. Unless there is a way to change the constants. I doubt this is a good idea.

Well, what I've done with the demo, although minor, seems to be working out okay. All I did was give each thruster upgrade a minor speed boost in addition to the standard burn time boost.

Btw, notice that the default thrust is 72,000. DIvide this by 120 to give 600, which means 1 kps = 600. This holds for all thrust values, including per ship settings like strafe.
