Mission Mod idea

I'm not much of a coder (although I'd love to learn) so I don't know if this is possible, but I have this idea for a "Mission Mod"

As has already been said many times, the random missions in FL are in sore need of variety. Since pretty much all they have is seek-and-destroy (and possibly return to base) it gets a bit tedious after a while.

The idea is twofold:
1. Create new random mission templates; possibilities are escort, recon, investigate, patrol, infiltrate, etc (infiltrate involves a temporary rep change where you investigate an enemy's base and try not to get scanned). I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be too hard, since the demo story mission involves escort duty.
2. Create side quests; story-style missions with no direct influence on the story, but perhaps adding background. Incentives would be things like cheap, free, or exclusive info (location of wrecks, jumpholes, etc) or good items, and if all else fails, more cash.

Please feel free to slap me if this idea has been discussed already, but I can't find the search link, and if anyone cares to teach me how to edit ini's and code into mods, I would greatly appreciate it.

sorry. just tired of everyone posting mod ideas or announcing the NEW mod they are gonna start to work on instead of just doing one and THEN say something like, "Hey look, I made a mod and here is what it is like...."

I just don't want to see the reactor editing forums turn into the quake/ut forums which are always full of garabage and no real content...

let those who are editing edit and post progress on stuff. everyone else get the frell out hehe.

if you are in the forum because you want to learn how then great! learn by reading, then take what you learned and try it on a totally different file and see what you come up with on your own. then post what you learned and did here on this board.

not ripping on you so much as just jacking your post

No offense taken, thanks for the input. Basically, this is an idea I would like to implement once I learn the ropes of editing, which I fully intend to do. Perhaps those more experienced could create tutorials so us n00bs can learn.

Well I think adding random missions is definitely on the list of things that the community wants to accomplish, if DA does not patch them or add them in an expansion pack. I havn't look at that part of the game heavily enough so I don't know if it would be easy to just put some more in. It will likely at least require some modifications to the base UI so it may require dll editing...

Tachyon's probably right, plus the vignetteparams.ini file that has the mission stuff in it is a pain to read through.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find more info about it.

This might be a tad premature, since I am still trying to learn the ropes here but I've looked at the random mission generator system and it's pretty obscure.

It's not looking real good at this point, but I am not giving up yet. The 'random' missions appear to be tied to some internal tables. I hope that's not the case, but so far it seems to be.

I'll be looking over this in detail today.

Dang, I was hoping they'd just be scripts with random variables.

If it does involve dll editing, what is the legality of that?

I don't think you need to worry about legality as long as you don't use the info/data on something else that the game itself.
We are dealing with M$ here, so you never know if their lawyers are hungry ... but most companies are not so stupid as to sue people who work FOR the game and therefor FOR the company.

couldnt you just edit the dll and put the edited ones back under a different name. and make the script use the new .dll? it wouldnt be M$'s dll anymore
