Calling all talent!

I first of all want to thank everyone for tearing through the Freelancer files, you all are extremely talented...no kidding. I'm honestly in awe of your results! RubberEagle, Tachyon, Falken, S7ATiC, Knight79 and of course the guru HCl, I hope you guys make money on yer talent somewhere somehow you darn well should. If I missed anyone, I am sorry...but it's late.

Since everyone is already doing this, and I have ZERO talent with these type of things, is there any way possible for someone to at least check something out for me? You regulars know I rarely post on here and even rarely ask for help ( ) but there is a real good thing that can come out of this that would benefit us all.

Can someone start doing some magic on the server software? Maybe see if there is some sort of authentication used for incoming clients, or better yet a way to limit players from joining unless they're using a clean, unaltered client? Even check to see if there's a way to dig into the netcode and make servers larger and more stable on the way it handles packets? I mean logically if you can identify a virus in real life the tools are right there to created the antidote right? I'd buy someone their own copy of Freelancer and ship it anywhere in the world if this could be pulled off, guaranteed.

I appreciate your time everyone. No rush!

I agree on making some sort of CRC checking tool. This has to be put on the "things to do soon" list if DA doesn't get some sort of patch out soon.

be close to breaking some internet laws though. always a touchy subject. massive online games have always had the problems of wanting to scan everyones computers to make sure they are not cheating while pissing off the customers that pay them for the service.

I am sure there is a way to run checks and balances on the game without scanning someones files. though what that would be is beyond me.

<---Not a coder. more of a tear it apart and see what it is made out of and then find someone to put it back together for me kinda guy.

I would happily play with netcode - if only I had access to the source code

Until then, not much can be done. I looked into the EXE with a machine code tool but its tricky to do anything beyond basic hacks at that point.

Currently we are trying to add entirely new game modes to the server - but are having limited success.

Tribes 2 had CRC checks. If your files were edited, like player turret and mines colored orange or another bright color, it wouldn't let you connect.

Well, Tribes 2 wasn't violating the laws because it wasn't actually scanning anything other than it's own files... what would be bad is when it would scan the broad memory to see if you have any debuggers running, I think.

Battlefield 1942 has a quite waterproof system for cheking hacked exe's, trainers and false cd keys. maybe look into it.

Actually, I believe that since you are only licensing the software, they can do whatever they want with it.

Then again I ain't no lawyer.

but we don't have a EULA for doing that with this game thus we would be breaking laws..

also there are still alot of things in the courts yet about the EULA and how they do and do not hold up.

I wouldn't go there but that is just me.

I doubt those who cheat would stay with the game long anyways guys.

honestly, outside of editing the hell out of this game. the game itself does get pretty lame after awhile.

Perhaps posting a warning for those entering the TLR server?
(I don't have the game so i'm not sure how it would work)
is there a splash screen that could tell ppl, "By continueing to connect, you agree to have your hd scanned for modified INI files" etc.
anyone playing legit wouldn't have a prob (at least i wouldn't )
and anyone hacking would be like "Screw that i'm not joining"

...Just a random thought from a random mind
