Client-side cheating! Uh oh!

Client-side cheating! Uh oh!

Okay, this REALLY shocked me. I put up a dedicated on one of my machines, and ran a client on another machine. Decompressed one of the ini files on the client and modified it so that the ship's costs are drastically low. Logged into my dedicated from the client and guess what? THE SHIP'S PRICES WERE AS I TWEAKED THEM ON THE CLIENT!!! WTF?! Went ahead and bought the ship at the price. Tried a different client on a different machine with a clean ini set. Ship's prices were normal (since it had no tweaked ini's).

Anyways, long story short, the server does not check for INI consistency, which means Client-side cheating is FULLY possible, and quite easy. Shame on DA for letting this happen!

It may be possible...but the ultimiate power is still within the server admin rights. That's a quick way of getting banned if you use it against other players in a harmful way, especially on my server or others associated with TLR.

But how would you actually know when a player is using a cheat like reduced prices? For trade runs and such, they could tweak the prices of goods. Or worse, they could have the Titan be sold on Manahatten for them at dirt cheap. There's a lot a player can get away with :-/

The best solution is for DA to come out with a patch that forces the server to check for client consistency.

*nod* But I am more worried about the servers that do not have the responsible Admins. I mean, this is the kind of problem that can really ruin the enjoyment of a multplayer game. It won't be long before someone comes out with a clean, GUI based prog that can tweak your ini files for you, so that the average player can cheat up the yin-yang. I really don't understand how this could have gotten by DA, especially when I read in a FAQ a while ago that they WERE going to check for client consistency :-/

Yes, I agree. Cheating is going to be an issue on servers that don't watch their accounts. It's really not that difficult to watch them, it just take time away from playing and that is the price you pay for offering up a server.

I'll say this, when the servers who have ties to this site start hearing rumors of strange things that point to possible player cheating...we will be fair, yet firm. The idea here is to enhance the enjoyment of the game for EVERYONE, not just a couple of hacks/cheats that make an even veiled attempt at ruining these persisitent servers who have made a commitment to staying on all the time and giving people a place to enjoy the game as it was designed to be played. They can go to another server and play all they want with their mods/cheats/hacks.

If you come on any of the servers with ties to TLR and you're cheating, and you don't make a mockery of your "god-like" abilities, I see no reason why you can't be a part of the family.
