ship control mod request

I only have demo at the moment. But how tricky would it be to create a mod or even just a control scheme that changed the way acceleration and deccel worked - at the moment 'w' is accel and 's' is deccel right? Well I'd love to see how fl played with a default speed of 0 so if no keys are pressed you slow down. When 'w' is pressed, you set throttle to 100%, when 's' is pressed you use reverse thrust (already in game). This can sort of be emulated by setting speed to 0, then using afterburner and reverse thrust instead of accel and deccel, but it's a bit extreme. There could be another key for 'always run' as it were, or the equivalent of engine kill.

Yes this is taken from one of the ways descent could be set up, it worked really well and I'm just wondering if it would help give the player more control during combat.

Thoughts?

TIP: Just turn your engine off and use your Afterburn. You will come to a dead stop everytime you let off.

It sounds like you're saying afterburn only for speed, which wouldn't actually work so well necessarily... afterburn is not unlimited.

i assumed you were in combat if you were under normal thrusters and it is way easier to kill if your speed is going up and down thus the afterburn for forward post.

Actually afterburn is unlimited if you engine kill. Just tap the after burner every second or so and you'll be able to stay at pretty close to 200.

What's strange is that the mod you want is actually happening to me already. For some reason my throttle control alternates between "press accel. key to accel. and deccel. key to deccel." and "press accel. key to go full throttle and release increase key to stop". For hell I can't find out why it does that, and it annoys the living **** out of me.

Personally I much prefer to use "throttle" as opposed to "go/stop", as I don't really see why I'd ever want my ship to stop dead. Plus it's not like the max speed of 80 really mean anything in space anyway. So I mapped my afterburner to W and reverse to S, and so long as I am at full throttle I can move easily and agily. But really, even if I had to stick with "go/stop" that'd be fine, just don't switch back and forth for ****'s sake. Some screwed up bugs here.

BTW, keeping zero throttle and use only afterburner and reverse wouldn't be as effective, as zero throttle+afterburner doesn't go as fast as full throttle+afterburner. Plus you'd probabably be dead before you can scream if you ever stop mid-combat.

Ran across something similar with my controls turns out if you use the wheel on a mouse it locks your thrusters in what ever position you leave it. Might just be how my mouse is working, but something to consider.
