police never complete their scan of capships

Often when flying my Dreadnought around I'll get scanned by local police for contraband. Then they just hang around forever never telling me that I didn't have what they're looking for.

This doesn't happen all the time, occasionally I do get the "you don't have what we're looking for" message.

How would I go about ensuring that it's done every time?

It may be possible that they get out of range of you prior to the trigger being completed as I beleive it is a timed thing.

Increase the cargo_scan_range of the scanner the NPCs are using. This should solve your problem.

I'll try that but the NPCs doing the scanning are always well within the 2k range.

When an NPC tries to scan your cargo, he will try to close to within 500 meters of your ship. As a guess, maybe the collision avoidance behavior of the NPCs is causing them to stay beyond that distance? If this is the case, and if you feel up for some easy hex editing, check out the scanning constants in Limit breaking 101, specifically this one:
500i in content.dll, 0x6C790 = max range at which NPCs will scan your cargo

Try pushing up the 500 to, say, 1000. Also, if you're using the patched version of Freelancer, be sure to use the 1.1 offsets (they are listed in an obvious fashion somewhere in the thread).

Oh, duh. Yeah, Dev's right on this one - a higher range would be good as not only would NPCs correctly scan battleships, however it would also give you less time to get away from a scan if you were carrying illegal goods.
