Slow Death?

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Slow Death?

It seems only the major modding forums remain active. And there hasn't been an update to any tool but FLE for over a year. Nor any activity indicating any progress.
Also it seems there's very few novel threads anymore, and it's just day in and day out the oldies answering the newbies.

Is the Freelancer modding community slowly dieing?

Gee, I hope not! I know of one new mod underway. And at least two others nearing completion (Gibbon and Nightstalker).

Freelancer will continue to evolve. It has been, is and will always be in the forefront of space sim games. Ever since I first played it, nothing has yet come close.

Have to second that, there is nothing like it out there, you show me a space/trader/combat game thats as easy to get into or moddable like FL. Specially one you can play not just in single player but also multi player. There are some excellent single player games like X3 or multiplayer ones like EVE but it kinda stops there.

As to new tools coming out, there's been a new version of HardCMP, FLE plus others, the constantly evolving sur splicing utility and so on. Maybe some people don't like posting lol, but with dowloads of over 38000 for Crossfire and over 15000 for the Discovery mods plus numerous other total conversion mods including my own (Galactica 2.0) due for release sometime soon plus Nightstalkers Universe mod (NSU), there is plenty of life left in Freelancer and long may it continue.

With the accumilated knowledgebase of everyone here, not just the current regulars but i mean the tutorials and the various guides available here on Lancers, if you're willing to spend the time modding Freelancer then some damn fine results will come out of it for sure

I don´t think so. As I know some great mods are underway. One by myself: Ultimative-FL. No as Freelancer is so easy to mod (Which was initially planned by DA) I´m looking forward to a long-living community

Yes and no, most of the modders we've had are young (under 25) and as such RL tends to take over from modding, us older modders (I'm 40) will carry on because 1) we enjoy it & 2) it's bloody addictive.

As long as we have someplace to go like TLR then there will be a community of some sort, but even TLR has been feeling it of late. 18 months ago I would regularly find 100 users online, nowadays I'm lucky to find 10 online at the same time as me.

>18 months ago I would regularly find 100 users online

I think thats because you dont see the number of the anonymous users anymore.

Correct me if Im wrong @ TLR staff, but I didnt ever see more than 0 anonymous users in the stats.

I do not think it is slowing. I always see new posts from newer modders which probably means there are more poeple getting itno modding and these poeple have questions. The vets are still answering questions and helping out.

There are numerous mods being worked on and many that are still going strong. The mod myself and my fellow mod teams members are workign is a total conversion mod Called Requiem. We have gottena lot done, but much more work to go yet.

So, no, I do nto think it is slowing or going away anytime soon.

Now that I think of it,
I started playing Freelancer when I was 49 or 50. I am 52 now. I started modelling about a year ago and modding about 6 months ago. Even for the relatively short time I've been at this, I am amazed at how much I've discovered and learned about this amazingly stout and long lived game.
There is so much more to learn about this and I am certain even as long as we all have been at it...we're still at the tip of the iceburg.
Even at my age, I see the potential this game has.
Granted, I haven't been at it nearly as long as the Freelancer "Elders" have been,
BUT..I see fresh and creative minds come about every day.
These "New" minds may just have the incentive and ability to take this game to levels that the rest of us have dreamed of.
I am thankful to the "Elders" who have laid the groundbreaking concepts of modding this game. I trust that the Fresh Thinkers will continue to add to this and bring about the evolution that Freelancer was meant to be.

It does not hurt to try. Success often comes through trial and error.
