custom .ale, or: How do I create better-looking effects?

Hello,
Does someone know how to create custom .ales(those files which are used by some weapons)?
Thanks in advance

It´s not possible to make custom ales yet cause we don´t know how they actually work.

the better answer is that we have at least two programmers with some knowledge of it and who have sucessfully edited them(see Arghs XML toolkit effects), and we're all just waiting for mana from heaven, in the form of an editor or at least a hex guide, atm

If you can settle for modifying an existing effect, such as changing its color, size, etc. you can usually strike gold just by looking for numbers in the .ale file that correspond to the attributes you want to alter. For example, the starflier here is using one of the bretonia engine effects that I toyed around with: flame of doom

Another example, these are... one of the missile effects, I don't recall which. They were greatly enlarged and their color was altered: missiles of doom

Back when I was messing with .ale files (roughly the same time that I was looking for constants in the .exes and .dlls), I had other things on my plate and so wasn't really interested in fully cracking the format. If there is enough demand for completely new .ale files, we may have enough information scattered throughout the TLR community to get a good head start with it.

I've got a question about this.

Back when I first read about ale file modifying, it was said that you could only change existing ones and not create new ones, because of some crc numbers and the way the ales were referred to.

What happened to that particular problem? Because I have the need for new effects while not altering exisiting ones.
