music mods

Sometimes I get tired of listening tothe same bg music from the game, how do I change the music files with my own files? Where does freelancer keep its sound files? will mp3 work or do I need it in some kind of special format?

Thanks

You need .wav for Freelancer and it has to be Mpeg-3.

So I just put in my own file under the same name?

And what do you mean, "you need .wav and it has to be Mepg-3 format"? arent wav and Mpeg-3 two different audio formats?

To add music, yes add it to the folder, but you also have to edit the files that use th music, when it plays and so forth. I'm at work at the moment, but I belive there is either a tutural or general edit file that covers this. i will look tonight when I get off work.

No, .mp3 is mpeg-3 compression but higher quliaty mpeg-3 compression. wav files can also have mpeg-3 compression (along with a host of other codecs) but its at a much reduced sound quality. Somehow FL managed to get its audio files in 80 kbps mpeg-3 compression, but since i haven't found a codec for that, i am intrigued as to how that managed that...

Here's some instructions for ya:

1. Download the LAME MP3 ACM codec or Radium MP3 ACM codec(Google it)
2. Install it
3. Find a wav file you want to convert and open it in "Sound Recorder" (the one that comes with windows).
4. Click Save As...
5. Click the "Change..." button next to "Format:" at the bottom of the save window.
6. Change the "Format" dropdown box to MPEG Layer-3
7. Select the bitrate, frequency, channels below that under attributes.
8. Save the file as a .WAV.
9. Done.

As far as I know FL will handle any codec as long as it is in the WAV container and the computer has the appropriate windows decoder installed. But Mpeg-3 works best for size/quality. But make sure that you pick CBR (constant bitrate) and NOT VBR (variable bitrate). This option made FL crash on two of my computers so I assume it doesn't work

I might write a complete tutorial soon as nobody seems to have done this stuff.

There is another solution.

The acm codec lets you make small sized music files but as stated before you need the files to be in wave format.

There is a freeware program that converts MP3's into wave format...

It actually adds some code to the mp3 file so it's readable as a wave format.

Search google for mp3-2-wav converter...
