System INI files?

I know some files like goods, weapons, and ship loadouts ini you can change and it takes effect as soon as you load your save game up. So if you change the density, and max battle size in the system ini's do you have to start a new game for it to take effect?

I've gone and changed system files whilst I have been in-game by simply reloading my character, but, some files such as adding gates, or changing locked gates etc while in game would most likely require the deletion of player accounts.

I've done this before I've done LAN, testing and yes it does work if you add a gate or encounters.
However, there are things that will cause a crash. (Silly me it's been so long since I've modded on SP that I seem to have forgotten the details of what causes a crash. )
If I am not to rusty at modding due to my break, the system isn't loaded when you are docked. So if you add something to the system, it shouldn't have any problems when it trys to load when you undock.
Best thing to do is to try it and find out. Then post back and teach me something.

No, you should be ok changing the pop levels of systems. It won't require a restart. The only things that would need a start is if you were taking away best_path routes or doing faction related things like changing names or setting initial_world relations.
