How do I edit exe and dll files?

I have searched some, but I only find a post which partly copies an other seemingly out-dated post in the tutorial section. It seems to me that you edit dll and exe files by using a HEX editor which I have downloaded.

Then I hear that you need the Freelancer source code to read what you will see when you open a FL exe/dll file with the HEX editor. It sounds to me that the source code is yet to be released by Microsoft, and that people sign some place on the net to tell they want it released.

Still it is mentioned that people have found things like unused functions like rolling from side to side with ship maneuver by reading dll and exe files. When reading a exe/dll file with the HEX editor nothing seems very understandable. And how could someone have made a such wonderfull program as Fled-ids if they didnt know the Source code?

I cant install anything more on the computer at the time so at the time I try figuring out HEX editing at this page. and later on I will see if I can figure out what's up in this forum.

I am interested to know how I could read FL exe and dll files with the tool you posted a link to.

you will still need a good hex editor just to read the files so you are going to have to download one of them.

As mentioned in the first post I already have a HEX editor, its name is HEX Workshop if you can tell me if it is good or bad.

I am not going to change HEX editor yet but thx.

I really cant understand a thing of the HEX in the DLL and EXE! Where can I learn the basic of decoding the HEX?

Hex editting is hit or miss (mostly miss), nobody can look at the code and tell what it means, you have to disassemble the files to be able to understand them and that takes you into the realms of Visual Basic and C++ (and a lot of headaches).
People like "Dev" have done the hard part and have left instructions on how to alter the files with a Hex editor.

**shuffles of with a new headache**

Thx Bejaymac!

I am not sure where to begin with the HEX editing yet, but I will see what people like "Dev" have posted.
