A few questions i have...

Hey all, Just started a new project - Building up an entirely capships mod with no lag. Sounds weird i know, but it'll be fun when its finished, i think..Anyway, i had a couple of questions about it.

1. Can you set scanner ranges (for other players) to as high as you want, or are they fixed at 5/10k? I wanted to make the game so most engagements were from around 20k away.

2. Can you make your own (rotating) turret models? i wanted to give the bigger capships turrets like you can see on the huge WW2 warships (think Bismarck, etc.)

Cheers for any help you can give me...And check back regularly, I'm sure i'll have more questions

2nd question answered If anyone knows of any way of getting past the 10k limit, please tell me!

Does anyone know of a custom turret models tutorial?

Okay, i have another question...

Can you make Mines have a "lifetime" of around 20 minutes? e.g they will sit there for 20 minutes before blowing up. Is there a way to do it without the "minelayer" ship having to sit within scanner range?

Yes you can, bhut the lag would be awful on servers.

from what i know its not possible to drop a mine fly away 20k and come back

the mine would be gone
but yes its possible to place mines with a very long lifetime

i disagree i think its entirely possible - in MP you will often run across loot that other people spilled on dying, and it could have been hours ago or just a few seconds they died(actually, loot is a bad example because it has its own lifetime settings that give it 1. visible lifetime and 2.unseen lifetime) - but the point is, FL is a pretty comprehensive engine and its capable(the server) of tracking hundreds of thousands of items all over the galaxy.

supermines with 20 minute lifetimes:imo yes,and its probably lag safe under the condition you restrict it by giving the mine a large cargo volume,or making it very expensive - then you could drop 1 mine, and that mine would be capable of destroying nearly anything that came near it(i wonder though, would NPC's still be targeted by it when you left the screen...hm)

I believe NPC encounters only happens when players are about...So in theory it wouldnt matter.

Oh wait, if another player came near that would cause NPC encounters...hrmm.

Oh, and about the lag - In theory, it would cause as much lag as a single, 20minute lasting, non-moving laser shot.

E.g not much.

In essence...

Anything that Freelancer has to draw/display for longer.. can cause lag.. Also the quantity of items.. particularly of higher poly ships/bases etc.. with a maxed out cluster of hardpoints can cause lag.. including longer draw distances.. there are so many that can cause lag..

Then there is the capability of the server to handle the extra load .. then .. how good is the client machine.. is it a slug.. the client (with an older machine) can be very disdvantaged by some mods..
