I don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, but I found this tutorial very helpful.

Also, look through the 3D Modelling and Texturing forum rather than here - you'll find more related to this sort of thing there. Hope this helps.

I red, lets say almost everything, tryed all programs end plugins, but there are 5 files ( in the directory ( lets say "DATA\SHIPS\starblazer\yamato" ) :
yamato.mat
yamato.3db
yamato.cmp
yamato.ini
yamato.sur

as I understand the CMP file is the texture for this ship, but I can't opened, I used many programs, like MilkShape_3D, msCMPExporterV0_3_beta, gmax12, 3DMODELER, CMPConverter, hardcmp-v1.0.0.18 and plugins for photoshop and acrobat, but still can't open this file ( I mena open and change)
maybe I am wrong and this is not the file that I need to change
I think there must be some easy way to change the texture, just open one file, change ( lets say repaint in photoshop), save and replace the original file
but maybe there isn't

.MAT is the texture file for the ship not .CMP

CMP is the mesh of the ship

You need the UTF editor available here (do a search for it) and you could look at kazdia's texture guide (also search here)- he goes through all the steps on changing an existing texture (except the actual changes, of course)
