Mooring

ok, i know its been covered, but i cant find the right tutorial for it. how can i make fighters dock to use berths and capital ships to dock to moors?

if its not possable, would i be able to make it so mooring is the only docking option?

my problem is, with the mod im doing now, there are alot of bigger ships and not too many smaller ones, id like to have the small ones use berths and the big ones moor, id also like to make the ships not show up on a planet or base, so theres no clipping issues. if all of the ships moor, it wouldnt be the worst thing, but id rather there be both types of docking.

Chips did a fine tutorial on this, in the beginners section somewhere and it does work

you can set the can_use_berths of the cap ships to can_use_lareg_moors then the ships set with that will moor like the transports

by can_use_lareg_moors i mean can_use_large_moors sorry about the typo

Of course, the problem with setting cap ships to 'can_use_large_moors' means they cannot land on planets (unless you change the docking ring from 'ring' to 'jump', that is- but that can cause problems with the npc trains blocking the ring)

doh, the link on chips thing isnt working.

um, when i do the setting "Can_Use_Large_moors" or medium moors, is that it? do the ships only use large moors and nothing else? or do they still use berths? and is it combindable? like can i set it multiple things like
Can_Use_berths, Can_Use_Large_moors? even though i dont think ill need that...

Apologies for reviving a dead link but I can't get my capships to moor. At best they receive acknowledgement from the base and go into the docking routine up to the point where you're in the cinematic. There you'll sit until you F1 and reload the character at which point you'll be very nicely parked at the moor but no access to the base.

This has been tested with the Bretonian BS, the Liberty Cruiser, the Kusari Gunboat and the Luxury Liner. Tested on Newark Base, NY and Planet Manhattan, NY. Newark Base will acknowledge and take over control of your ship to dock but never complete the job. The moor above Manhattan won't even acknowledge the dock request.

This was also tested with the Rheinland BS but that ship is so large it never got close enough to go into the cinematic. That's another problem.

I've made the changes to the docking_spheres as recommended by Argh but no joy. All ships have can_use_large_moors set.

What am I missing?
Is there a mod that successfully uses moors that I can disect?
Any ideas why Manhattan docking control won't even acknowledge my request?

TIA
Robo

Edit. Interesting note: I rearranged the docking_spheres and changed the rings to jumps as suggested in another post and now Cap Ships can dock on Manhattan using the docking rings. I don't want that to happen. Ships still enter the docking routine at Newark and go to cinematic but never complete the docking routine.

I found the entry in Li01 for the docking_fixture (mooring fixture) above the manhattan docking ring. Adding the missing info from the docking ring did not provide the contact with docking control.

Still looking for ideas.

If you hit esc during the docking sequence, you'll land. If you wait until it plays the docking sequence, you're stuck.

I'm going to assume that if there were a fix for that you'd have posted it.
I seem to remember though that Bobway's Victor mod allowed you to use moors for large ships. Yet, none of the tips I've found in these forums has fixed the problem and I can't find the Victor mod anywhere to look at it.

Has anyone even thought about just allowing ships to use moors...and instead of pressing the ESC key...it would just skip the cinematic and you find your character walking into the bar/equipment/trader/ship room ?
((As for the smaller ships, they would use the docking ring sequence as usual with accompanying cinematics.))

Then,
when you launch..instead of leaving the planet through the docking ring with "ghost docking ring" enabled (gasp)..your ship simply reappears on the moor station and you UNDOCK?

I think all the information that's needed for this is already in the game. All we need to do is find it and "unlock" it.

Rankor,

First off, there's a tutorial by Chips on how to make ships dock using the moors and secondly, you only need to amend the base ini files to alter where your character ends up, ie bar, equip dealer and so on. As to using dockings rings, you can always take them away completely...

Gibbon,
I've seen the proof of concept mod called "planetary beacon" (something like that anyway) where it removes the docking rings. That's great for a "retro-mod" .
I wouldn't want to remove them though in my own mod, except for possibly some "primitive systems" which could be built.
One pretty good modder had the right idea, but failed to implement it in his TC mod...so he has undockable "inhabited planets" . (Unless he has fixed that aspect) .
I would prefer to keep the docking rings, but change the way large player ships undock from mooring fixtures. (to the best of my knowledge, this hasn't been done yet although the docking part has been pretty well covered) .
If a large ship is to use a mooring fixture (med or large) it should undock in the exact same orientation that in docked. (nose in, back out) .
I would also like to see large player ships use mooring fixtures in different ways also. This might involve how or where the HpMount is located. I'd like to see a large transport (say, certain custom transports) use a lateral docking point. So, instead of docking "nose first" at a station, it docks from somewhere along the ships lateral side as if it were unloading cargo or passengers. So, as the game goes, when a player enters the station, the player ship dissappears. By the same theory, when a player undocks from a station, the player ship reappears..it should be in the same orientation as when it docked in the first place.
THAT, I believe is possible.
This might mean the installation of additional HpMounts for that purpose.
It's a theory I've yet to try out.

@Gibbon: Can you post a link to that tutorial? I can't seem to find it or if I did I didn't understand it. What I have going on now is I can dock appropriately but when you dock on a mooring fixture over a planet the ship drives right through the mooring fixture and heads right into the planet at which point you end up on the planet's docking platform as if you were in a fighter or freighter. When next you undock the ship leaves via the docking rings. Battleships get hung up in the rings and the Rheinland BS blows up even before the cinematic is over due to the atmosphere.

When I moor on a base it moors appropriately but when you undock/unmoor the ship flies forward through the base before it gives you control again.

@ Robocop

Here's the link to the tutorial, you'll have to scroll down the page but it's def on there,

http://www.lancersreactor.com/t/forum/t ... ng&M=False

To get the bigger ships so they don't dock through the mooring fixture, you might have to play around with the distance setting from the moor, i find a setting of around 75 seems to do the trick for large moors.

@ Rankor

That's a novel approach you're attempting, i agree that possibly some different hardpoints might do the trick, maybe messing around with the orientation of them might help your cause.

Thanks Gibbon.
One thing I've been scratching my head over is the conversion of ship yards into dockable entities. (Heck, they're ship yards) . IMHO this is where the larger ships like medium/large transports/trains and ships up to the Dreadnought class should be bought, sold, launched from and docked at. (not planets or stations unless the station is a custom station for that purpose) .
But instead of launching from the "berth" of the station, it should launch from the frameworks of the shipyard.

On that note, I've created some super massive space stations and a shipyard for just that purpose. (for all types of ships, but especaily for Capital Ships which even some of the standard shipyards are too small for anyway) .

A little guidance on that aspect would be greatly appreciated.
