I've noticed that some MOD's change a server's version so that only clients running that MOD can access it. I was wondering, where are the server AND client versions defined?

You need to edit the version info in the Freelancer.exe and Flserver.exe, use a program like resHacker to do it.

Its straight forward to do and legal as well as your not messing with the source code, and for further proof take a look at the server select screen and you'll see a column called "version", MS wouldn.t have put that there if they didn't want us to change the version number.
