What would YOU do with the Source Code

To those who dont know what the FL source code is, it's the text script that was compiled toghether to form Freelancer.exe. To use it, (WHICH I DOUBT ANYONE COULD DO NOW) you would edit the text script and compile it to form an edited FL.exe. The language, of course, is SOOOOOO mcuh easier than hexes. Maybe even almost ini like.

What I would do with it:
1. I would get rid of tradelanes and jumpgates and put Starshatter style jump drives instead
2. I would put in a REAL dynamic economy, a clean one that changes even as you look at it.
3. I would replace the graphics engine with instant rendering mentalray. (Just kidding)
4. I would create *THE C WORD!!!*s that actually work and use energy.
5. I would put ships with moving parts.
6. I would make carrier class caps, which could use a special command view to command their flock of fighters.

No offense about saying *THE C WORD!!!*.

I would sell it, and then go on holiday for a month with a bevvy of scantily clad beauties who would only be interested in my money.

I would laugh at Microsoft's blatant inability to make decent code. For a GREAT example of what I mean, go download the DirectX SDK - thousands of lines of near unreadable code.

I have become one with my computer. It is a feeling of ecstasy...the perfect blend of logic and emotion. I have reached...Nerdvana!

meh, if i had all the file schematics i'd just reverse engineer a compatible game engine

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 5:38 am

i would drop it and use the starlancer source code instead

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 5:54 am

Oh come off it, Freelancer's source code isn't THAT bad. Sheesh.

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 6:33 am

lol - yeah, you're probably right. But everyone likes to pick on big corporations. In actuality, it's my understanding that Microsoft wasn't directly responsible for coding the game anyway - it was Digital Anvil. I think Microsoft just distributed it. Actually, if I had the source code, I'd try to figure out why the game always crashes when I try to quit the game. I don't think it works nearly as well in Windows 2000 as it does in XP.

I'd redo the game just the way it was meant to be when Chris Roberts was still with DA. Simple as that, nothing more, nothing less.

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 10:17 am

i would put it to good use and make some undetectable cheats from it

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 2:19 pm

Thats not good use.

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 2:20 pm

yes it is

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 2:42 pm

I would finsh the game like the makers wanted to do.

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 4:20 pm

engineering a cheat is not a good use of source code. Fixing bugs is a good use. I'm certain everyone here can agree on that.

Post Thu Sep 01, 2005 4:44 pm

sure, i wouldn't want to agree with -Troll- anyway.

what i would do:
purchaseable bases, user creatable(easily, constantly updating) factions,character-to-character base interaction for players, purchasable costume acessories, jumpdrive w/ fissile(expendable) fuel, expendable hydrogen fuel for engines/reactors,fix that DAMN key-detection scheme that screws up when you start using multiple buttons at once, create polygon collision detection, bump mapping & automatic LOD generation, option for working ejection pods w/ the incentive to return to base alive being a new ship paid for by insurance / failure to return alive penalized by loss of ship,toll-gates,hireable wingmen & factions, dockable player flown ships to act as bases, lots of stuff

still,i love this game for what it is and can be,and i think its source is brilliant when you consider they packed in enough instructions to simulate an entire universe on a 600mhz machine.and no,microsoft had no hand in the source except for purchasing it outright then curtailing its high ambitions in order to get it out a year later than the promised release date
