Is this possable?

Ok I been thinking about this for awhile. My friend got this idea from star lancer. Where those warp drives can send you to other systems and the bad side used it to jump the other side. (I haven't played the game. ^^)
Anyway my friend said that he would try to make a ship that can act like a jumpgate.
Like it would have a charge time and once that charge is done you get to pick a system to warp too.
He says "Yea I'll learn how to script and work on the EXE files and the ini.."
I tell him I don't think you can do this. Becasue I've never seen this or heard of a ship that can act like a jumpgate.
My question to you is. Can you do this?
Thanks for reading.

I'm not sure that it would work. The jump gates and holes work by you docking with it then it has "goto (system, zone, jumpeffect)". If it was going to an object i think you get problems with the game engine not loading in the other system.
And, I can't see how you could mount a jumpobject to a ship. It would most likely bugger up the best path and shortest legal/illegal path too.
It is possible to have a docking ring which docks you to an object in another system, but if you don't save the game before you leave the game crashes to desktop. Which is what i was on about earlier.
It sounds a bit like a eldar craftworld type thing going on, they had warp gates joined to their ships. It would work, only if the ship wasn't playable or moved. So, you could create a new jumpgate object that looked like a ship but acted like a jumpgate. But, i still can't see how you would choose the destination.
But, having a specialised capital ship that behaved as a jumpgate would be a very cool idea..

Warp Drives, Jump Drives and other named Drives have all already been talked about, fiddled with, tried again and again, everything was tested, but so far nothing worked.

We had some hoaxes about it, false hopes, but the discussion of that is now finished been a good while.

Sure, if you can do it, good. But be ready to go further away than anyone never did. And ready your Print Screen button! No picture, no trust!

I think that right now ALEs and SURs are much more important than a jumpdrive, especially because a jumpdrive could easily be used as cheating.

But that is supposing a jumpdrive could work!

Is it possible to increase the docking range and speed so you can dock with the jumphole within it's set range say 100k for example

This has already been gone over before, its one of those posts that never really goes away. The docking range idea, was tried a while back, there is a limit to the range of the docking sphere.
The jumpgates use a command called "jump", which is used in the docking fix to allow objects to dock with an object that it wouldn't be able to normally. The Jump command seems to only have a range of a couple of k or so.
It would be nice though to have some kind of warpdrive/jumphole creator thing as an occasional use. But, if it was created and brought into the game it could be potentially as devastating as what the cloak used to be on servers in multiplayer. It would kill trade, and allow players to jump out of combat at will, not good..
It dosen't seem like we'll be seeing anything solid though on this for some time yet to come..

Could you make a player jumpgate that others could use?

Post Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:30 am

Like in Starwars when Obi-Wan has that hypergate thing that he docks with to get from A to B lickity split?

I just like the idea of a capital sized ship that advances into enemy territory within a fleet, then the fleet gets reinforcements and supplies from ships jumping through to join them. It would have to travel to the destination first and defend itself..
But it is possible gamewise, the ship could behave as a ship normally when classed as a ship and behave as a jump gate when classed as a solar.

I meant have one player flying a "jumpgate ship", which he could then stop and others could use.

We kinda already have a Jump Drive in Freelancer...

Remeber, in StarLancer, you use the jump drive to travel short distances inside the Solar System. About as long as Manhatan to Newark. Except in an instant, rather than a high speed. I'm speaking of FL'a very own...

Cruise Engines!

uh...........ok
I was kind of thinking going towards warp drives where you get to one spot in less then a sec., so I don't know where cruise came into the pic, but I don't think from everyones post you can do this ,so plan thrown away.

Hey guys,
The jump drive idea was mine. ^^ I've messed around with vids before. I've actually created a few of my own. I'm used to being able to script whatever I want and have it work. I'm sure there's a way to manipulate the files. They have windows that open and have selectable text in them, so why can't I do that? I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Also, you can't think like that. In the world of game creating, anything is possible. A jump drive IS possible. How do you think the cruise engines work? It'd be like a cruise engine, only you jump from system to system. Anyway, if I fail, I fail. So long as I've tried. I won't be satisfied until I've found out for myself that I cannot do it. Now, I see the points you guys have made. My plan was, to change one of the key options you don't really use in Freelancer. For example, one of the "set weapon group" buttons. The jump would start when you hit Shift + j. So far I haven't seen Shift + j used for anything in the FL .ini files. Anyway, when that command is made, an option screen will appear, very much like the menu screen when you hit esc. It'd display every system in FL. Each system name will be selectable, just like the esc. menu. I would take the esc. menu script, copy it, edit it, and apply it. For example, say you're in the system New Tokyo and you want to go to New York. You would hit Shift + j and the menu would appear. When the mouse icon hovers over the name, the name lights up like it always does, you select the name and it activates the drive. It'd be like the cruise engines. You'd hear the charging noises and instead of it saying "Cruise engine charging- weapons offline- #%" it would say "Warp engine charging- weapons offline- #%". Then it would do the normal jump. Just like being in a jump gate. I'm sure it can be done... Again, you can do what ever you want to Freelancer, it's just a fact of being able to edit EVERY SINGLE file in it. And I'm sure there's a way to look at them. If they can, I can. No reason why I couldn't. "Think outside the box"
