Got another question

Been playing about with starspheres and i've had a thought. Normally, you have to have unique names for architecture and textures in order for things to work. But, with starspheres, should you? Its impossible to have more than one system cmp visable at any one time. So it should be possible to just copy the cmp, rename it and replace the textures with your own.
The question is why do starspheres have LOD's? They seem to have up to mip7-8, i thought the idea of this was to reduce the processing time on objects further away. I'm guessing it has to do with the options screen where you choose the level of detail. Am I right?
