To be honest, I dont think that Ioncross or/and other server-side cheatdetection software could detect such tradelane-speed hacks...

My suggestion would be to avoid the topic of tradelane speed, considering the possible damage to the MP community(!).
Maybe you can code that there is a server version that sends the clients a tradelanespeed-value that is then taken by the clients as the tradelane speed (as you proposed in the other thread - that would require to not give any documentation about how this is done though!)

However, for now I would stick to more server-side only issues or/and harmless client issues concerning the .exe and .dll changes
(i.e. credit limit, rep limit etc...)

/edit:

"Oh, I mean't Universe chat for all players (changes the console to Universe chat) so people can communicate with each other better."

can you give the universe-chat messages a special color, other than white (white for admins only for example, universe chat then.. umm yellow whatever ^^)

this sellable (remountable) engine patch sounds like bad news, how many mods out there will be completely screwed up by people mixing engines and ships? feel free to delete my post if you think i'm giving anyone ideas that weren't already obvious

@Cold_Void
If it's one thing I'm sick of, that people complaining. Becaue people complain, nothing is accomplished. I don't know if you were ever taught this, but, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all!

Post Mon Jun 20, 2005 11:54 am

I wouldn't call it complaining but pointing out. Only through positive criticism possible bugs, exploits and errors can be avoided or at least detected.

Of course it always is possible to verbalize positive criticism wrong. ;-)

@alfa_astrix

its about teh evil users mixing up teh engines, really evil

seriously: if that really is a problem in a mod you can at least detect that sort of "cheating" by simply scanning their ships... nothing to worry about.
You can always see things in the very pessimistic way

Post Mon Jun 20, 2005 11:59 am

@alfa : If people didn't sometimes critic, how would we be? Remember that without this, who knows? Black people could still be slaved, etc...

Not that I don't like this engine fix, it is great. I only feel you didn't really react politely.

i'm more worried about the fact that some ships in my mod have engines with crazy amounts of max force, for some special planar-handling and if someone were to say, unmount one and put it on anything else, boom instant tradelane engine. :/ i'm not complaining about the mod, i'm just 'complaining' that its release is premature and some of the more innocuous patches first would have been nice.

I would assume that if you are on a server, swapping engines will result in a swift bootage. Its non transferable equipment as far as the server/ioncross is concerned...

Post Mon Jun 20, 2005 6:51 pm

My first reaction to Cold Voids questioning post was "but all stock engines have the same thrust value so why would it matter!!??!!"

Now that he cleared it up that in his mod he has custom ships that required custom engines to work right I can see that he has a valid point. However my mod removes the stock engines and all players get their choice of 9 fighter engines to mount and use. I really want the ability to let the players swap engines after they buy it. I all ready use the engines in the MOD and just accepted that to change engines you had to buy your ship over again, this will fix that for me.

So not every use is going to be for cheating. I do agree that the exe editing has potential for a lot of problems, but nowhere near the amount that the cloaking device did. I also see a lot of work going in already to limit the amount of cheating problems these changes could cause. Like anything it can be abused by the sufficiently determined, but we should not ignore the good it can bring because of that.

Just my 2 cents..
Don't think of it as cheating, think of it as making the game more realistic. Because think, if you were Trent in the game, and say the Sabre engine was faster than the general engine, which do you think you/Trent would have remounted to the ship to better help you track down Ashcroft?

Aye, matey - and heck, why buy a new ship if you've got a Sabre when you're chasing Ashcroft? Lol That'll set the smuggler straight.

Nah, but seriously, there are mods that allow you to buy almost all the engines in the game - granted, you ahve to fly around and usually find a place selling the ship itself in order to find the engine for sale, but even then you can just find an engine, buy it, and jettison your old one. Rebalance Mod worked along these lines, and I don't think it was too unbalanced as far as ship speeds went ...

But leaving engines as inseparable attachments to ships allows modders to control the speeds of ships and ship classes very easily -- without having to worry about people "cheating" their way by mounting a LF engine on a VHF or something. I guess you cold always play with the volume of engines with different classes to help with that particular issue, but .. eh, it's a personal choice for the modder, I guess.

i don't think its realistic at all-engines have very specific engineering needs so why should one hull fit just like the next?ah well,it is not a major concern it is just annoying and as you point out, engines could already be purchased without this mod, what this mod really does is allow you to buy any ship and keep its engine, just don't ***** when everybody is using ONE damn engine( "the best" ) in everything lol.

so what is the final word from Alcander on this, does it detect engine transfers as cheating on an unpatch 1.1 server?

a few words about engines:
engines are the 2nd most important half of ship handling characteristics, the difference between max force and linear drag determining the proportional differences between speed & cornering.if you swap an engine you will not just have a ship with different speeds but completely different handling.oh yeah, and i haven't seen ONE single mod where engines have ANY powerdrain, engines that run without energy?must be friggin rube goldberg devices.just be ready to see fighters with battleship engine effects because of silly things like 0 volume internal equipment or 0 energy engines O_o

My personal opinion is that releasing anything that makes clientside changes is a mistake no matter how great the new 'features' are. Serverside stuff is more acceptable because it can be controlled.

Partially agreeing with Louva here. It really depends on what is released. Harmless things wont bother. But each fix must be taken individually.

What can be detected as cheating shouldn't be much of a problem, but for the rest...

Just to say about his, I am kind of siked of this too, so just to let you know, Cold, in the mod that I am doing, all of the engines drain power, along with cruise and everything else.

Just a thaught, but why don't you do a quick tutorial for the people who know what they are doing, so we may go ahead and get these things, then start making it into a patch for the people who don't?
