It's probably just an ini entry but I don't know where to begin.

Well, the Ioncross Char editor, you can switch engines of different types into what ever ship your flying, so it stands to reason, you can switch them in a mod, like having a freighter in a VLF and so on.

Edit - you do it in the Goods folder.

This can be done, but (very big BUT here) unmodded engines all give you the same performance no matter what ship you put them in so why bother.

If you create your own engines for pilots to buy then you run into another little problem, you cant sell or transfer an engine once you bought it. You can eject it out into space using the jettison cargo ability I have found.

If you mean having a combination of two types at once, i think it is possible. You could only have one nozzle though, i think.. If you add an extra hard point to the engine then add both types to either the goods entry or loadout it should have both of them shown. You could possibly have a turbo for your ship too?

Actually, there is a small variance in speed, and, it can be modified easily enough.

ids_info = 264882
volume = 400.000000
mass = 10
max_force = 240000 ;Most fighter engines is 48000 but can be changed
;max_force = 240000 this changed to 480000 and you basic runaround speed is now faster. It can also be steped down to a slower speed.

Thanks guys but not exactly what I was looking for.

I'm more interested in the FX part of the engine. What I want to do is make a see-through "engine" with some fx inside the engine like a warp necel in startrek. But you could see it going on outside the ship.

I'm working on a cargo ship with a see-through hull and it's coming along nicely. Check my thread for more details.

Can`t u just make a engine nozzle and turn the texture to glass around it?
