No Error Spew Makes Debugging A Job For Sad Pandas

Heya,

You might know me already. I'm Bob McDob, Privateer: The Reckoning team member and recently ascended to project head. I'm not going to go into the thorny problem of getting reacquainted with FL modding after a year and a half away, but there is something that bugs me - error messages, or rather, the lack of it.

Whenever Freelancer crashes, it usually spits out a flspew.txt or somesuch, as I understand. It certainly did in the past. The problem now is that it doesn't, or even do as much as post an error message. All I get is a pause and then crash to desktop (and sometimes not even that much). This has made debugging very, very frustrating for me. I'm sure I'm missing something here, but I'm not sure what.

Anyone want to give a hoary old privateer a hand here?

If its an encounters crash - I don't get error messages....afaik that is

Apart from that, I have no idea to be honest.

I had the same, I managed to find the general location of the crash and removed both the Patrol and encounter in that area.

It sorted the problem out.

Hmm if i understand the question correctly, you are not getting an flspew.txt at all?

@BIGMAG:

Yes, we get that notice, but only if the executable outputs debugging information.

I have determined that the errors are most likely sound-related- see the "sound hang" thread. These are the ones that tend to crash so suddenly that the game doesn't post debugging information.

So, for your mod... comment out all of your Voices lines in FactionProps.ini and in your new Systems... and see what happens.

Doing so in my mod has resulted in error-free operation.

Make sure you have the default logging level set in freelancer.ini. It is possible to lower the logging level, you may have done this previously which could cause the problem.

Have you tried setting up a server (LAN for yourself or online while someone else plays and you watch console) and tried to recreate the crash? Sometimes the server console will give errors that dont show up or are hard to find in flspew.

I would like to add this. Chips is correct, crashes inflicted by encounters never generates a flspew output. But some other errors will do the same thing.
I found that the fact that the sound hangs does not imply that the error that is causing the crash is sound related. The sound present at time of crash is simply continued by your soundcard and it has not yet been told to shut up untill FL releases your computer. Than the soundcard will also be released and the sound will stop.
Sometime ago watercoolerwarrior made a very valueable suggestion. Use filemon(sysinternals.com) to monitor FL, maybe in that way you would get a clue.
