Break it up

All right, many questions in one thread seems to leave several unanswered. So, to the most pressing one.

I am interested in changed the LOCATION of the house names on the Sirius Nav Map. Here is the deal: for complicated reasons, I have had to change the IDS Name for Liberty to Rheinland, and vice-versa. But now the word "Rheinland" is where Liberty should be, and, again, vice-versa. So, I need to return them to their original locations WITHOUT changing the IDS Name AGAIN.

If that is not possible, then perhaps another meathod is available. Since they will still be in the same location, perhaps it is possible to change which IDS # says where to write what. If that was hard to understand, follow: if Rheinland is one IDS # (in my case, 460001 instead of 460004), how about switching what says to write 460004 in the area around Rheinland, and telling it to instead write 460001 there. No positions are changed, just where the IDS #'s are written. Thank you for your help.

so let me make sure i under stand...

you want to change the names of the liberty systems to rhienland and visa versa?

without changing the location of the areas?

If you wanted to keep where it used to say rhineland but call it liberty instead change these numbers.
1252 = is RHINELAND
1249 = is LIBERTY
I don`t think you can move the names to new places. At least i haven`t heard of it being done yet. The numbers above are from the resources.dll file.
Hope u get it sorted.

No, no, I already HAVE it to where it says "Rheinland" where "Liberty" used to be. I want to switch them back WITHOUT changing the already changed IDS Name. This is because the same thing that determines this also determines the "... System, ... Space" and Rheinland has an extra system. By changing Rheinland to Liberty, I can now add my Florida system in and make it look "real." Except, of course, that Liberty isn't in the Walker Nebula.

Mknote,

If it's not possible to change the location of the names on the Sirius map, you might consider a work-around: the sirius map is an image file somehwere in an 3db- or other file that can be examined with UTF editor. (I wouldn't exactly know which one but it's not too hard to find out). You could export this image, put the names in the image with Photoshop, and re-import it.

Then, replace the "RHEINLAND" and "LIBERTY" entries by empty strings.

But, I rather hope that someone will tell us where the location of the Houses' names is arranged, as I moved Liberty up north to create more space for Omega systems.

That would defeat the purpose entirely. If I replaced them with blank spaces, then when I would enter one of their systems, it would say ".... System, Space" and that's just as bad as having it say the wrong one. Is it possible to do the second meathod I mentioned?

Hmm you're probably right. How stupid of me not to realize that.

The second method you mention seems just as difficult to me as the first one. I actually have no clue about it, but it would seem to me that it will be necessary to alter the exe-file in any case. Of which I, unfortunately, know nothing about.

Got some minor progress not much..
In resources.dll
1372 "%s, %s system"
1373 "%s system."
1374 "%s system, %s space."

Now we just have to work out what on earth its linked to..

Post Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:44 am

I know WHAT they're linked to:

1372: Bases
1373: Non-House Systems
1374: House Systems

NOTE: The first one seems to be unrelated to a strid_name, because Freelancer automatically plugs in the Base and System name, probable through the universe.ini. If we could find the similar connection for system names...

However, I don't know HOW they are linked to, except for my hypothisis on the first one. I agree, that is probably the route that we'll find the solution. Thanks for keeping on this problem.

Ok you lost me halfway through the thread, the impression i got from your original post is that you want to change the universe-navmap background.
search your FL directory for nav_prettymap.3db, open that in UTFedit,
export your .tga texture and move the text
(that won't look pretty unless you are a whiz with clonebrush, better to make a new one....oi)then reimport it.
Remember that you can't exceed the original tga's bits per pixel(number of colors) or dimensions of course.

@ Cold_Void: The names of the Houses are NOT a part of the image; they are actually put there from Resources.ini (1249 to 1252). These strings are the same ones you see when you enter a system in of the Houses (E.g. "California, Liberty Space" is rendered in the upper left corner). That's the reason my idea of replacing those entries with a space (" " ), and replace the names in P'shop is crap You'd see "California, Space"

Hmmm, this has got me thinking. Could anyone take a looksie in the Freelancer .exe to see if its there (where the IDS #'s are written on the NavMap)? I understand that you couldn't change it, but if you can find it, maybe it'll lead to somewhere that we CAN change without being shut out by MS. I, unfortunatly, don't have the ability to peek inside the .exe.

There are strings in the exe for NavMapLibertyLabel and similar for other house systems. No idea what/how/if connected...

Post Mon Mar 21, 2005 3:10 pm

Would it be entirely illegal to change it to see what happens, but not release it (just see if it DOES change)? If that's stepping over the line, then perhaps we could see if these things can be traced outside of the .exe, and maybe, even, how to change it legally. Or, perhaps, we could find a way to make a script that would do the same thing without modifying the .exe. In any case, looking more into the .exe will likely result in the answer to this question, and many others.

Sorry to revive this (again), but, could you post what it says in the .exe about the NavMapLibertyLabel? Maybe, just maybe, it will have familiar values, and we can start to understand if/how to change them on the outside.
