Making new planets

I'm having trouble with making new planets. I planets I make don't want to show up in game, though everything else about them seems to be ok. To make a new planet, I'm simply copy-and-pasting info from a working planet to the bottom of the solararch.ini and changing the name, then changing the .sph and .mat files to ones from other working planets to match the look I'm going for. Personally, I don't see why this shouldn't work. I can resize planets and it works, but the minute I start mixing .mat files and .sph files from different planets, it doesn't work. Would someone mind explaining why this doesn't work and what I might be able to do to make it work? I know it's possible because I've seen it done on other mods. Thanks.

well without ofending you..... when a model is made it uses a particular texture, and there staroed in the .mat, when you start mixing them they more then likely have different names, and so when you start mixing them the names in the model files are different to the ones in the .mat file.

And why would you want to mix these anyway? A texture is applied to a sphere (.sph file). Mixing up a mat file with another .sph file wouldn't do anything different except from size changes, which you say you can already do.

Well...here's a couple examples. Not sure if anyone has seen planet Jupiter or Saturn in WTS, but lets say I wanted to make a planet that is the same size (38k radius), but has a green surface? It would be much easier if I could just assign a .mat file to the planet, rather than doing what I"m doing to resize a planet, which is to change the solar radius in the solararch.ini file, then go in to the .sph file (by converting it to an XML file) and change the radius there to match. Also...what about when I want to assign a texture to the planet which is not already in the game? Obviously it's possible, because it was done on Jupiter and Saturn in WTS, as well as on other planets in other mods.

For making new Mats, well there's one way I can think about that is pretty easy, but it is much more a way around than anything else :

Using MilkShape you make a sphere and assign it a texture, you export the .cmp and your planet would be a .cmp

I've also looked at the .sph files in UTF Editor, and I can say that if you try to make exactly the same way it looks in UTF, you'll be greater than I would.
Maybe there's a tool I didn't hear of though.
