FLServer was *not* the problem...
EDITED:
The past entry on this horrible problem is still below, just in case somebody else runs into this problem... as once it happens, you need to delete your Freelancer folder, your MP saved games, and reinstall FL!
And you're never going to believe this... it was a bad entry in NewCharacter.ini that caused this behavior, that I added at the last second and didn't bother to go back and check until now (because surely something like an INI entry couldn't corrupt your FL MP so badly that you could no longer make new characters, right? Wrong). It wasn't the EXE, the FLSERVER, or anything... other than a bad Loadout entry! Wow, what a mess... it took me 5 hours to track down a bug that I added when I was putting last-second touches on the mod! I'm back to bug-hunting- if I was tired enough to make a mistake like that... I'm sure I still have work to do
**************************************************************************************************
Ok... I just got done with Alpha 4 of Warriors of the Sky.
And the *whole* time, I'd been running MP servers... over and over again, to test the Alpha build. Everything was working just fine.
I did a player-wipe at the end of the process, and now... I can't create new players! No matter what I use as the name, it tells me that the name is already taken...
What the ... blue blazes is going on here? I've put up the Alpha... hopefully this is *just* going to happen to me, and nobody else... but that said, how do I fix it???
I've now tested with other mods... reinstalled FL... same problem. So it's not just my mod, I guess.
But what is going on here??? It's like the game has some sort of database that's corrupted, and it's sure not obvious. I've deleted everything in My Games... no-go.
Sooooo.... I'm out've good ideas. Without being able to make new multiplayer games or new characters, I can't even develop my mod.... is there a Registry setting that I can hack to get this to quit happening, or something? I'm stuck!
EDIT:
After deleting everything I could think of, reinstalling FL to a different HD, etc., etc., etc.... no-go. But I can now run other mods... can run Alpha 3 of my mod... etc... but I can't create new characters in Alpha 4 Somebody... please... go get the mod and try to start a MP server, and make sure this isn't happening to anybody else... I doubt it, but it's possible that the entire mod's corrupted or something. But at this point, I don't think so.
Getting rid of the customized EXE/FLServer did NOTHING... so it's not the version number, nor the main ini file, nor the customized EXE (which has been working flawlessly for the last 48 hours).
Which leaves me with a total mystery- how can it be that in other mods, where you don't necessarily spawn in NY, NY... everything works... and in mine, I am now unable to create MP characters? This is rather... puzzling. I am more than half-tempted to just pull the Alpha at this point, but I would like to get feedback from somebody to confirm that something's wrong with the build. If the Alpha's screwed up... that could set me back a couple of days, but I'm sure I can eventually figure this out.
