Spawning- anybody really understand it?

Basically, here's what I want to accomplish: I want random Encounters (of a specially-prepared type, blah blah blah) to occur only at a certain height Y. I don't care if they're patrol routes or regular randoms, and I'm thinking that working with a nearly two-dimensional Eliptical Zone will do the trick.

Does anybody think this is impossible, and if yes, why? There is a very good reason for me to want to do this- if I want to see AI-controlled ships (like, the ocean-going kind) in my mod, then I need to get this to work. I've done a couple of very early experiments, but the results were inconclusive... I'll do more tomorrow, as I need to get this issue wrapped up pronto...

I couldn't sleep until I tried this out.

The answer is YES! I can get things to spawn on a plane! And if they can't fly (by disabling all but turning on the Y axis) they STAY ON THE PLANE!!! WOOOOOT... I can have ships and hovertanks, just like I planned... and the player can fight them! Supah-sweet! This is going to be soooo cool... must... get... sleep... and make ships tomorrow! The next Alpha's going to ROCK with working ships in it... that people can, y'know... bomb and stuff... hehehehehe

Way to go. Thats does sound supa sweet. In the end, you might want to consider how you are going to differentiate patrol path "heights" on the nav map. Since it is only two dimensional, that may represent a problem... but who knows... =)

eesh... then you must also consider how to approprately display your ship's "height" in relation to... err... space sea-level... lol... that just sounds funny... sorry.
