Modding and Editing Questions - PLEASE read first!

The general place to discuss MOD''ing Freelancer!

Hello folks,

If you are here to try and mod Freelancer, you are at the right place! However, please bear with us - as we have some basics we would like you to follow before you ask us all to spend our time helping you out!.

Above all - the most important thing is that you will have to spend time and effort modding. You cannot make a mod in one day. You will need to invest weeks of your spare time getting the grasps of the basics. You cannot just start one day, and turn out a new mod the next. If you have played large scale mods like TNG, Rebalance, Epsilon and Evolutions - then each one has taken at least 500 hours, maybe double.......
Your best bet for anything at all is this:
Search Forums . You are best off putting what you are looking for, then select the forum (General editing or tutorial is best!), and hit search. You may have to look through ALOT of threads, but that is the cost of finding information. If you start a new thread asking something done many times before, don't expect a reply - you will be told to look for it instead.

First up, are you brand new to modding and don't know where to start? Then you should try the Beginners forum. You will find two nice threads to help you in there:

Beginners first port of call - which explains how to open files, how to decompress them, what tools you need, and how to make an FLMM mod.

Posting information and modding information database - which tells you what file is what, tools needed and more. It also includes links to our two most popular threads, the newbie questions. Those links are categorised so that you can find answers to questions already asked - therefore finding all the information you should need...PLEASE use it.

Next up - we have the tutorial forum - rammed with tutorials on how to do things. Please try there too - its a great resource!! You can search, or alternatively, Stinger has pre-made a post which contains links to most of the tutorials which is available here

If you are looking for tools to download, then there is an outstanding thread by Bakedpotato - which is here - and is your best bet for any modding tool.
If you are looking for a mod - then the downloads section is your friend. Don't tell me, there are thousands of downloads. Well - you can categorise them by selecting the category, and searching through - OR my preferred method is once more the search button you will find at the top right hand corner. Type in the name of the mod (like Rebalance) and hit search. It will pull up news items, but scroll down it will show related downloads too - including all rebalance versions. Neat huh

After that - you may wish to submit a file - read this to find out how.

If you want to know about SUR files (surface files) then you should read here - which will have all the information up to date.

Now - if your a server admin, and want to know what can be done on servers without a client needing a mod - then read this thread.

In the past there was a whole hullaballoo over the rights of modders - copyright issues etc. If you wish to know those rights, then please read this thread. It should explain it all for you.

If you are thinking about changing the EXE file version for your mod - then check this out here - which shows what numbers are available (mainly up to date).
