Helicopter-based ships

I'm wondering if anyone has looked at using a helicopter as a base mobel for a Freelancer fighter (sans-rotor blades, of course). The Apache seems to be perfect for strapping guns on, and would look pretty good. Heck, CorelDream 3D comes with a ready-made model of an Apache, so half the work's done already, so it would likely only need adapting and resizing for use as a fighter model.

Now, I'm not volunteering, 'cause I know next to nothing about making ships, and I don't have any of the software to do it (or the money to buy it either), but I'm simply putting the suggestion out that such examples would make an interesting addition to the vast numbers of fighters now avaiiable.

My suggested helicopters would be the Apache and canceled Comanche for light fighters (C'mon, where are you conna put cargo, really?) and things like the British Lynx and Russian Hind for Heavy/VHeavy, and perhaps the Blackhawk and HH-3E 'Jolly Green', as well as the bigger Russian models as freighters.

I'll shut up now, as I'm sure some of you modders out there are reading this with tears in your eyes... "Bloody idjut, tellin' us what to make next!"

Download Milkshape 3D an pay the $20 for the lisence

It's eyes were completly devoid of life,
Empty Orbs that took in the world with an unfeeling gaze,
A thin trail of blood ran from a fresh wound,
But it would not or could not tend to it,
Only one thing ever brought a spark of vitality,
To the eyes of this Tortured Soul:
The Suffering of others.

Heh, I already downloaded it yesterday, and once financial considerations are a little better, the $25 will be sent to those crazy guys that thought it up. Kinda sucks that I'm getting in late and they're working on MilkShape3D 2.0 just when I start to learn it.

I opened TLR this morning and was rather pleased to see a "Blue Thunder" mod advertised at the top of the page. 'Cool!' I thought. 'Someone finally did a helicopter mod!'. But it wasn't the Blue Thunder I thought it was . Still, an excellent mod from what I see of it.

I shall be using any free time I have to pour through the tutorials and hope to stick my first ship into FL before the month is out (probably some dumb-looking delta-shaped arrow thing with rudimentary texturing at best, but everybody starts somewhere, right?).

I still don't know why other modders haven't mentioned or apparently thought about helicopters as a source of model inspiration. The Kusari ships are especially similar to the fuselage of attack helicopters, and the Starflyer and Startracker civilian ships suggest kit-built civilian helicopters. I wonder if I can find a good 3D mesh of the Blackhawk for converting into a freighter?

Wish me luck!

Personally i think that building a helicopter based thing would be mediocere, building a planr just takes the biscuit (minus a few exceptions), pulling ideas from existing sci-fi games is good, but the best idea are always you're own.

Oh, for sure, being original is always the preferred method of creativity, but plagarism is a designer's best friend, second only to talent

When I originally posted this thread, I was hoping that someone had indeed created ships based on helicopter designs. Considering the Kusari fighters are only needing a little smoothing, a rotor-tail and obviously the loss of those freaky blow-off wings to look like a helicopter, I thought that it might be interesting to see what could be done with similar designs.

One of the barriers is that helicopter fuselage are typically much more cylindrical, not to forget the typically rounded front and high level of curves used in their designs. The Apache would probably require far less polygons than, say, a Blackhawk, for example.

Anyway... I shall be fiddling with all these cryptic modding programs and labouring to produce something vaguely entertaining and might even get to the point where I post it!

in regards to milkshape 2.0, it's been going on for well over a year now and has no release date, while future 1.7.# realeases have been mentioned, so don't expect MS 2.0 anytime soon.

@ Sun Striker

Now THAT'S a gunship! That's the kind of thing I'm talking about!

As to 'why' make a heli-ship... why not? The beginning of this thread DOES mention not having rotors ('cause that would just be silly) but the basic designs of helicopters are basically sound, and when compared to the designs used in Freelancer, are quite similar.

Practically all of the ships possess large, forward-facing cockpit windows (as do helicopters). Many have destructible sections that carry weapons (As do most attack helicopters, not including the Comanche). Helicopters come in a wide variety of end-use configurations, from simple modes of transport (compare the Bell 500-series to the Starflyer), through weapons platforms (Any military fighters, but especially the heavies, compared to helicopters like the Apache and Hind), through to heavyweight troopcarriers and cargo shifters (like the Blackhawk and Skycrane).

I'm not saying that a helicopter in space would be good, because that would just look dumb, but their designs could be adapted to create new fighters and freighters. Heck, ship designers plagiarize sources both fictional and factual all the time, so how is looking at a particular field of avionics any different?

I'm happy to say that this only steels my intention to create one or more mods based on existing helicopter designs. However long that takes me will be another matter, but I intend to do so regardless.

Thanks for the example, Sun Striker. I think it looks great! How about a cool desert-sand texture to make it look truly brutal?

Later all!
