Engine kill - a modding chalange?

Hi, I've been thinking about this a lot and often wondered if I should post it, but I think it's worth a shot. it might turn out a great idea, it might just as aeasy turn out more controversial then "The-mod-which-should-not-be-named"

Ok here goes:

Ever hovered in space at 0 speed and cut the engines? Have you noticed how silent it is when you do? I felt completely "unnoticed". It felt like NPC's were just passing me by without noticing me and going on with their own usual business. Of course this was in a friendly system.
Of course, they still know that you're there because they can see you, but also because they have you on their scanner. And that's where my idea kicks in: What if, when you cut the engines, you disapear from the scanners?
You won't be invisible, people would still be able to physically see you, but they wont pick you up on their scanners. The relation between the engine and the scanners is that the working engine somehow gets picked up by the scanners, so when you shut down, you automatically disappear from the scanner.
This would be tactically very interresting in dogfights for instance and when trying to sneak up on people. Perhaps using your thrusters would make you temporarely (re)appear on the scanners to not completely give you the upper hand.

Would something like this be technically achievable?

Oh, and before anyone starts screaming CLOAKMOD!!! BAN HIM!!! please have some patience and wait where this is going, it might actually work. Thank you

Sorry, but even though it was planned to go in Freelancer, there is no way to jam scanners without using a cloak. There are remnants of the feture in the exe but not a working feature to take advantage of.

battle is right, seems as if MS only half finished FL and rushed to meet the shipping date (curse you bill gates!!!!) and we the gamers got the shaft, as usual.

Related question:

Is it possible to link cruise engines with engine kill? So that once you hit cruise, maneuvering becomes inertial?

I doubt it, it's defined in the EXE file what cruising actually is. You can mess around with the speed and charge time, but I think the game recognises "cruise" and "engine kill" as completely different things
