Moddeling questions!!!(1)(by...me)

I am kinda new to modelling. And I had quite a bit of truble getting to a point where I could accually MAKE something! So. I have decided to make this thread for anyone who has questions relating to modelling. (Note: "modelling" not: "modding" ) Any who. I will help as much as I can. So... shoot!

Drizzt4.0's tutorial (the only thing that saved me from modeling disaster.)

Tools:

Milkshape (Used to export all models made for freelancer to CMP. The format used by FL for the ships in the game)

CMP Exporter (a plugin for milkshape to allow it to export to .cmp

Gmax (A good free modeling program that you can use to make ships in if you dont want to use milkshape. NOTE: You still have to use milkshape to export to .CMP)

FLini editor (used to edit the .INI files in freelancer. There are other programs out there that do this. But this is my favourite)

(Note to anyone. If I missed anything, let me know)

(Umm... Sorry but, could someone please fix the spelling in the title?)

Ok well I could probably use some help with this.

I've got a couple of models done. I'm still having alot of problems with my hard points. I got 1 successful model done, with working hard points, but after that, it never worked again. Can you try and explain to me how to place them, cause I've been doing this:

1) Taking a face somewhere on the ship, where I want the hp to be.
2) Splitting it into four smaller faces.
3) Selecting on of the smaller ones and then duplicating it.
4) Renaming the duplicate to whatever it needs to be.

so here's some questions:

1) When I'm texturing, should I be texturing the HP duplicate faces?
2) Why does my texture show up weird? I'm using a 128 dds file, which is pretty much swirly gray, and it only shows up as swirly on a few parts of the ship. The rest is just plain gray with no swirliness. This is IN milkshape by the way, I haven't gotten any of these ships to NOT crash in the game, excepting that first one I made, which sucked 'cause it was full of inverted faces which I couldn't fix.

Hmm... About the textures, try Drizzts tutorial, and skip to the texturing part. About the hard points... It seems you are doing fine. Give me some of names that you put in there. ("EXACTLY" how you put them when HPing. Also, you could send me the ship (cmp/md3/gmax/3ds/ any of them really) file and I could look it over for you if those dont work. Hope I helped

ok well my HP names are like this:

a back slash \ will be replacing the pipe (vertical line) because this board doesn't support them.

Hp/Fixed/HpDockingLight01,02
Hp/Fixed/HpRunningLight01,02,03,04
Hp/Fixed/HpHeadLight
Hp/Revolute/HpWeapon01,02,03,04,05,06
Hp/Revolute/HpTurret01
Hp/Fixed/HpMount
Hp/Fixed/HpTractor_Source
Hp/Fixed/HpConTrail01,02,03
Hp/Fixed/HpCM01
Hp/Fixed/HpMine01
Hp/Fixed/HpShield01
Hp/Fixed/HpEngine01,02
Hp/Fixed/HpThruster01
Hp/Fixed/HpScanner01

I copied the names straight out of drizzt's tutorial. I noticed somewhere in an .ini file that contrail's were spelled "Contrail" instead of "ConTrail", so I tried that as well. No difference. As for texturing, there's really not much in there. I mean, I know how to apply the textures, I just don't know why it doesn't apply it properly, there's nothing more in that tutorial that can help me.

Hmm... I havn't goten around to trying any of my ships in-game yet. I'll see what I can do. You can Email me the ship(s) if you want. Maybe that'll help

OK, now its my turn to ask a question. My first attempt at modelling following drizzt's tutorial seems to have gone horribly wrong, I now have an invisible ship. I can buy and fly it, and the weapons show up, but the actual model is invisible.

I've flipped the textures vertically like the tutorial said, and can't think what else to do.

sounds like a typo in the material name / mat file / ini reference to the -mat file.
one or more of those 3 can make it invisible.

Did you scale your model when you were done? I had the same problem with my first (and only) working model.

I had a pretty flying thruster and 2 guns.

My ship was too small.

Make sure it's scaled.

I asked this question in Drizzt's tutorial forum but no one could help me. Hopefully you can. I made a model, got it flying, but I had sparks coming out of the ship. When it's moving the sparks come out of the thruster. When it's sitting still they drop out of the shield. So I'm assuming it's something in the interior, but I haven't got a clue what. Any ideas?

Ok. For the invisible ship. It could be a LOD issue. Have you looked in to it?

Post Tue Apr 06, 2004 12:05 pm

Thanks for the feedback, I have the LOD ranges set to 0, 2000 (It's a HF), and I scaled the model as it said in the tutorial (Double size). It may well be a typo (I'm famous for them), I'll check through it again later.

Try "LODranges = 0, 999999, 999999, 999999, 999999, 999999" and tell me what happens (Kinda weird answering YOUR questions :p. I'm used to YOU answering MY questions )
