A question from a Gradius fan...
Okay, I highly doubt it, but, I can't help but wonder...Has anyone here ever seen a MOD (or work in progress) devoted to ships from 2D shooters? I'm talking about things like Gradius, R-Type, Darius, etc. Freelancer's a great game, and now that I know there's a modding community, I imagine it can only get better. Personally though, I would love to see one mod that included some of the best ships from the oldschool era...
Vic Viper (Gradius, 1985)
One of the first 2D shooters I played, actually, and it left one hell of a lasting impression on me. The Vic Viper's unique powerup system was way ahead of its time, as was the overall gameplay of Gradius. This ship had it all, rapid fire impulse railguns, double impulse railguns for attacking at angles, air to surface Missiles, a heavy plasma laser, the Option pod (mimics the ship's actions and fires the same weapons as it) and of course, the ever so handy shields that protect the front hull from damage. Since Gradius, the Vic has had a ton of new weapon options availble, more than I think anyone would want to read...
Lord British (Salamander, 1986)
Similar to the Vic Viper, and flew alongside it in this 2 player variant/spinoff of Gradius. Along with Vic Viper's arsenal, it also carries a new weapon called the Ripple Laser, which fires expanding energy rings. In Gradius Gaiden (1997) its normal laser was replaced with a new heavy laser called the Disruptor. Along with that, missiles travel in two directions (Up and down for horizontal levels, left and right for vertical)
The R-9 (R-Type, 1987)
Another noteworthy craft, the R-9 Fighter's arsenal may be a bit less advanced than that of say, the Vic, but its primary weapon is nuts. Its beam cannon is capable of charging up to unleash destructive attacks such as heavy lasers, spreads of explosive plasma, or even rapid fire plasma. It relies on a Force unit to add special weapons, such as reflect lasers, ring lasers, and spread bombs. Funny thing, the Patriot in Freelancer looks kinda like this sucker...
Silver Hawk (Darius, 1986)
Your typical starfighter, this ship was armed with upgradable shields, cannons, and bombs. In later games, various weapon configs were availble, such as wave cannons that pierce enemies, and plasma cannons that replace the bombs and fire in four directions.
That ship from Galaga (Galaga, 1981)
It was basic, but it blew up bugs quite effectively with a single cannon. Not to mention the ships can link up with one another for additional firepower.
I realize this is mostly wishful thinking, but hey, a guy can dream, right? And I'm sure there's a few oldschool fans and modders that might come across this, so who knows?
